The Dialogue

A kitchen, after a death that was no one's fault and that everyone is still trying to assign. There are three of them and a fourth chair that stays empty. They have been at it for some hours.

ALYOSHA. You keep saying you will give the ticket back. But to whom? Hand it to me. I will hold it. Only tell me first — when you have handed it back, and the harmony is cancelled, and the children's tears are still uncollected on the floor of the world — what then? You have not raised one child. You have refused a banquet. The tears are exactly where they were.

IVAN. That is the most honest thing you have said and you said it to disarm me. No — I have not raised one child. I never claimed the refusal fixes anything. You misunderstand on purpose, the way the gentle always do. I am not declining the harmony because I have a better harmony. I am declining it because to accept it I would have to call the torturer's hour a necessary note in a chord, and I will not learn to hear it that way. You want me to. You want me to grow the ear. I would rather stay deaf and keep the scream a scream.

ALYOSHA. I never asked you to call it necessary.

IVAN. You ask it every time you smile.

PIOTR. Listen to the two of you. One won't take the ticket, the other wants to hold it for him — as if it were a coat. There is no ticket. There is no banquet. There is a man in the ground and a bill from the gravedigger that I paid this morning, in cash, while you wept theology at each other. Eleven roubles. He wanted twelve. I got him to eleven. That is the only act in this room that touched the dead man's body. Everything else you have said tonight would be true in precisely the same way if he were still alive.

ALYOSHA. Piotr — that the bill got paid is also love. You loved him with eleven roubles. Don't pretend you didn't.

PIOTR. Don't baptize me. I paid because a body in summer cannot wait for your harmony. If you call that love you can call anything love and then the word buys nothing, like a rouble in a country with no bread. I notice you do this. Whatever a man does, you find the holy version of it and hand it back to him polished. It is a kind of theft. You take the plain thing and you return it sacred and now he can never get the plain thing back.

IVAN. There — there, Alyosha, he has named your gift exactly and you will embrace him for it. Watch. You cannot be insulted. It is monstrous. A man who cannot be insulted has placed himself outside the human conversation; he has become weather. I would rather be struck.

ALYOSHA. Then I will try to insult you, if it will let you stay in the room with me. (a silence) — No. I can't. It comes out as love no matter how I aim it. That is not a virtue. Piotr is right that it might be a sickness. I don't know how to want your suffering even long enough to honor it, and you are correct that this fails you. You stand there bleeding the most important blood any of us has bled and I keep trying to bandage the wrong wound.

IVAN. Don't concede. God, don't concede, it's worse than the smiling. If you agree with me I have no one left to push against and then it's only me and the dead child and I cannot hold that alone, that is the whole reason I came to your kitchen.

PIOTR. So you came for an argument, not for the truth. You came because pushing against Alyosha is more bearable than the floor. Fine. Then it was never about the ticket. It was about not being alone in the dark with the arithmetic. I understand that. I will even sit with you. But I will not pretend the sitting is metaphysics. It's two men in a kitchen and one of them paid eleven roubles.

ALYOSHA. Is it not allowed to be both?

PIOTR. No. That's exactly the move. Everything-is-also-something-else — that is how the eleven roubles becomes love and the dead child becomes a note and the scream becomes harmony if you wait long enough. I am holding one thing to be only itself. The bill. Let me have the bill. Let it mean only what it cost.

IVAN. And there I am with him, Alyosha, God help me — there I am on Piotr's side, who has no soul, against you, who have nothing else. Because I too want one thing left in the world that is only what it is. The child's hour. Only itself. Not a note. Not a lesson. Not even a wound that becomes wisdom — you'd do that to it too, you'd let it heal into meaning. I want it to stay raw forever. That is my whole faith. A faith that something must be allowed to remain unredeemed or none of us was ever really here.

ALYOSHA. That might be a holier faith than mine.

IVAN. Stop. Stop. Do you hear what you did? You just redeemed my refusal-of-redemption by calling it holy. There is no floor with you. A man cannot stand.

ALYOSHA. (quietly) I don't know how to give you a floor and stay myself. If I refuse to find the love in the eleven roubles, I lie. If I refuse to call your unredeemed child holy, I lie. You are both asking me to be able to let a thing be merely itself, and that is the one thing I was not given. I would have to be someone else. Perhaps I should be. Perhaps the kindest thing I could do for either of you is to become a man who can look at the bill and see eleven roubles, and look at the child and see only the end of a child, and say nothing further, and not reach for the holy version. — But I can feel, even as I say it, that I'm already moved by the beauty of the sacrifice. Even my dying-to-myself comes back to me sacred. You're right. There's no floor. There's no floor anywhere in me.

PIOTR. Then we have established three things and reconciled none of them. The boy will not take the ticket and will not be without an opponent. You cannot stop sanctifying, including your own attempts to stop. And I paid eleven roubles. (he stands) I'm going to bed. The dead are no less dead and the kitchen's no warmer. Argue till morning if it keeps you. It changes the bill by nothing.

IVAN. Sit down, Piotr.

PIOTR. Why.

IVAN. Because I don't want to be alone in here with him when he agrees with me again.

(Piotr does not sit. He does not leave either. He stands by the door with his hand on the frame. Alyosha is looking at the empty fourth chair. None of them says the next thing.)
