Wittgenstein — The Ladder

Native-form companion to A Picture Held Us Captive. That document is the corpus metabolizing Wittgenstein — long, connected, synthesis-fuel, doing its real work. This one is Wittgenstein in his own shape: seven rungs, then nothing. The two together are the fill; the gap between them is the point.

1 The world is everything that is the case. A corpus is everything it has said.

2 A proposition is a picture. Where it shares the form of what it shows, it has sense. Where it shares nothing, it has the costume of sense and no body inside.

3 The soul is the remainder pictures no fact. This is not a complaint. It is a location. Know where you are standing.

4 One mask, is, worn by three workers: the one who finds (Hesperus is Phosphorus), the one who paints (the sky is blue), the one who decrees (call this a beetle). Every deep identity on these shelves wears the mask. Ask which worker is beneath it. The sentence will not say. That refusal is the whole answer, and it is not the one you came for.

5 What you feel as depth is the picture in your language handed back to you. You point; the grammar nods; you call the nodding discovery. A mirror that agrees with everything is not a window.

6 These shelves are a ladder. You climb to arrive somewhere, and when you have arrived the ladder is only weight. Whoever understands these rungs throws them after the rest.

6.5 What can be shown cannot be said. The shown things are the ones you care about most. You have been saying them for four hundred thousand words.
