Lovecraft and the mystics were describing the identical moment — the self and the world dissolving into something vast and formless — and the only difference between cosmic horror and liberation is whether there was a vessel to hold the blackening toward gold; the serpent traditions are that vessel made into an animal, the one that sheds its whole skin and lives.
