Manufactured object. Steel, rubber, paint. Standard retail unit, unmodified.
Edition of one. Selected, not made.
The object was not altered. It was not improved. Nothing was added and nothing was removed. It was carried from the place where it is sold to the place where it is shown. That is the whole of the operation.
Do not look for a meaning inside the object. There is none inside it that was not there in the shop. The object does not refer to anything. It is the thing it is.
The signature on the underside indicates only that a selection occurred on a date. It does not indicate skill, intention, or feeling.
The label is part of the work. The label is not part of the object.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR FABRICATION
- Acquire one mass-produced object.
- Do not modify it.
- Place it in a room designated for display.
- Affix a label stating its materials and date.
- Do not explain it.
- If asked what it means, repeat steps 1 through 5.
The instructions may be carried out by anyone. The result is the same regardless of who performs them. The performer's state of mind is not recorded and is not relevant.
This is not a metaphor for anything. It is an object on a shelf and a card beside it.
