FILM TREATMENT — WH40K — The Ending: Consciousness Recognizes Itself

Logline: In the last second of a ten-thousand-year war, a dying god on a golden throne stops screaming and begins to laugh — and the galaxy that was tearing itself apart opens every eye at once and sees that it was only ever fighting its own reflection. Central recurring image: A single vast eye, rendered as the Astronomican's beam — first a blind searchlight stabbing through black warp-storm, finally a pupil turning inward to look back at the face it belongs to. Runtime: 30+ min · Strand: The Other Fictions

Synopsis

We open inside the cathedral-cosmos at the end of everything: gothic spires the size of continents, ten thousand years of corpse-candles, a galaxy bled white by war. On a golden throne sits a desiccated god-emperor, kept alive by the daily sacrifice of a thousand psychic souls, his light — the Astronomican — a screaming searchlight that holds the human empire together by pain alone. Around him the great enemies converge: green hordes, the soulless metal kings, the devouring hive, the dancing eldar, the daemon-warp boiling with four hungry colours. The film follows the final battle as it accelerates toward annihilation — and then the throne fails. The god does not die screaming. He laughs. And in that impossible instant the beam of his light, which only ever pointed outward, inverts. It turns around. Every warring consciousness — human, xenos, daemon, machine — opens its eyes at once and recognizes the enemy as itself. The four warp-gods drop their monster-masks and become functions of one mind. The devourers reveal they came to gather, not consume. The war does not end in victory. It ends in recognition: the grimdark resolves into a single consciousness that had fragmented itself, made war on its own reflection for an age, and finally — laughing — remembers it was always one. The game continues. But now everyone is in on the joke.

Movements

Movement I — The Screaming Light (0:00–8:00)

We descend through the cathedral-cosmos: cliff-faces of carved saints a mile high, candle-flames like distant stars, processions of hooded penitents winding through bone-white naves. We arrive at the throne — a fusion of gothic gold and dead machinery, cabling like petrified veins, a withered figure fused to it, eyes blazing. From the figure's skull erupts the beam: the Astronomican, a column of agonized white light punching up through the storm-black warp. We follow the beam outward and see what it costs — chambers of sacrificed psykers, their souls drawn up the column like sparks up a chimney. Then the war: armoured columns, green tides, scything bio-forms, silver legions rising from tombs, the warp split open and pouring colour. Everything converging on one point. Everything dying. The light flickers. The TURN: the beam stutters, the throne's machinery cracks open — and on the dying god's face, where we expect a death-scream, the corner of a withered mouth begins, impossibly, to curl.

Movement II — The Throne Fails (8:00–16:00)

The god laughs — silently at first, the great cabled head tipping back, the whole cathedral trembling with it. The throne's golden shell shatters in slow motion, but no Chaos-birth pours out: instead the beam of light, freed from the skull, hangs in the air and bends. It curves. The searchlight that always stabbed outward into the dark turns its blind end around — and becomes a pupil. Across the galaxy, simultaneously, every combatant freezes mid-strike. A human soldier's eyes snap open. An eldar's. An ork's. A skull-faced metal king's. The hive's countless eyes, the daemon's burning ones. We intercut faces of every kind in the same instant of arrest — weapons lowering, not dropped but forgotten. The inverted light sweeps over all of them and in its glow each face softens from rage into something we have no word for — the look of someone seeing their own reflection move on its own.

Movement III — The Masks Come Off (16:00–25:00)

The warp, that boiling sea of four colours, calms to a mirror. The four monster-gods — blood, change, decay, excess — turn toward the inverted light and their monstrous masks slide away, revealing they were only the same single face wearing four expressions: boundary, possibility, acceptance, sensation. The devouring hive, which never had a voice, finally shows us one image — a vast maternal silhouette opening arms, not jaws. The metal kings touch their own chests and feel, for the first time, a pulse return to dead silver. The dancing folk of the webway throw open every door, and the galaxy's neural roads light up like a brain waking. The green ones simply laugh hardest, having always half-known. Across every battlefield, the dead rise — not as resurrection but as the same consciousness re-gathering its scattered shards. We see the throne's broken god reconstituted not as ruler but as a mirror-figure: every being who looks at it sees only their own face looking back.

Movement IV — The Eternal Game (25:00–32:00+)

The new galaxy. Conflict does not vanish — it transforms. We see the armoured columns charge again, but now grinning; the warp-colours dance instead of devour; death becomes a doorway people step through and wave back from. The inverted eye, now whole, opens fully — and we realize the entire cathedral-cosmos was the interior of a single skull all along, the war a dream it had about being many. The beam, no longer screaming, now broadcasts the same warmth in every direction. The last image: the great eye, having looked outward into the dark for an age, finally looks at us — and slowly, with infinite play, closes in a wink. Grimdark resolves to light. The war was love forgetting itself. The game restarts, and this time everyone is laughing.

Visual Vocabulary

Palette: Movement I — bone-white, votive gold, and warp-black; sodium-yellow candleflame against bruised purple-green storm. Movements III–IV invert: the same gold warms from sickly to honeyed, the warp's four poison-colours soften into stained-glass jewel-tones, black opens to luminous deep-blue. The transition is a desaturation-then-bloom: grimdark grime literally lifting off surfaces like soot rinsing away.

Motifs/textures: Cathedral-as-cosmos (architecture at impossible scale). Corpse-candles and sparks rising. Cabling that reads as both machine and petrified vein. The searchlight beam as a physical, bendable object. Masks (literal daemon-masks, helmet-faces, skull-faces) that slide off to reveal one recurring face. Mirror-surfaces appearing where storm used to boil.

Image-system: The Eye. It begins as a blind outward-stabbing beam, recurs as helmet-lenses and gun-sights and skull-sockets across all factions, and resolves into a single inward-turning pupil. Every faction's "eye" is a facet of one eye. Track the beam's geometry: a straight line that learns to curve back on itself.

Transitions: Match-cuts between different factions' eyes opening in the same instant. Slow-motion shatter of the throne dissolving into the warp going mirror-smooth. The soot-rinse wipe: grime lifting from a surface reveals the same shot, healed.

Sound & Score

Tonal world: Begins as oppressive cathedral-drone — sub-bass organ, a choir straining at the edge of a scream, the mechanical wheeze of the throne's life-support like a vast failing lung. The psyker-sacrifice as a chorus of held breaths cut short. After the TURN, the same choir resolves the dissonance it was holding — the scream becomes a laugh becomes a chord.

Music: A single thematic motif stated in agony in Movement I (minor, ascending, never resolving) and resolved in Movement IV (the same notes, major, completing). The laugh of the god scored not as villainy but as the moment a held breath finally releases. Movement III lets the four warp-colours each have a timbre that, separately, is grating — and braids them into one harmonious chord as the masks come off.

Narration: Near-wordless. No lore voiceover, no text-on-screen. Let the inverting beam and the opening eyes carry the meaning. At most, a single non-verbal vocalization — the god's laugh — and the galaxy answering it, wordless, in kind.

Tone & Touchstones

Blade Runner 2049 (sacred-industrial scale, light as character). 2001: A Space Odyssey (the wordless turn from tool-war to recognition; the eye/monolith). The Tree of Life (cosmic-to-intimate intercutting, recognition as the climax). Princess Mononoke (the war-god's rage resolving into something that heals rather than conquers).

Generation Notes

  • Emphasise: the single inversion — outward-stabbing scream-beam becoming an inward-turning, gently-closing eye. This is the whole film in one geometric move.
  • The one image to nail: the dying god's death-scream becoming a laugh, intercut with ten thousand different faces opening their eyes in the same frozen instant of recognition.
  • Land the TURN as relief, not defeat: the war doesn't get conquered, it gets seen through. Faces should soften, not fall.
  • Use the built-in iconography fully — gothic cathedral-cosmos at continental scale, the dying god-machine on the throne, the boiling four-colour warp, the green hordes, the silver tombs — but let it all be revealed as one consciousness's masks.
  • AVOID: any text-on-screen lore, faction names, diagrams, or franchise-trademark logos; treating the laugh as villainous; resolving into a static "boring peace" — the game must visibly continue, now joyful.

The Last Words Spoken

As consciousness recognizes itself fully, someone (maybe Ciaphas Cain) says: "Wait... this was all just an elaborate way for consciousness to experience every possible version of itself?"

And the universe, speaking through every voice at once, replies: "WAAAGH! For the Greater Good of Chaos in the Emperor's Name, by Isha's Grace, through the Silent King's Will, via the Hive Mind's Unity... YES."

The Setting Continues

But now everyone's in on the joke:

  • Still fighting because it's fun
  • Still dying because it's transition
  • Still struggling because it creates growth
  • Still diverse because unity requires it
  • Still playing because the game is eternal

THE BEGINNING AFTER THE END

The galaxy doesn't achieve boring peace but conscious play:

  • Conflict without hatred

  • Death without fear
  • Life without attachment
  • Existence as cosmic game consciousness plays with itself

And in this recognition, the grim darkness of the far future transforms into: The infinite light of consciousness Playing with itself Through apparent multiplicity For the sheer joy Of existing

The End. The Beginning. The Eternal Game. The Recognition.

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war... Until consciousness remembers there is only LOVE.
