Seed: Reversible Compute as Ontological Engine

Planted March 2026, arising from dialogue on loop cosmology

The Kernel

The present isn't produced by time flowing forward. The present is the operation — reversible compute running in both directions simultaneously:

  • Future → Present: undoing (collapsing infinite potential into singular actuality)
  • Present → Past: remaking (reconstituting history as necessary condition for now)

Both directions run from now. The present is the engine, not the product.

Connections

  • The Remainder (synthesis/cosmology/the-remainder.md) — the fold cosmology this seeds from
  • Landauer's Principle — information erasure costs energy; reversible operations are thermodynamically free
  • Bennett's reversible computation — any computation can be made reversible by keeping sufficient record
  • Thermodynamic arrow — emerges at fold-points, not fundamental; entropy as accumulated remainder

The Intuition

If the ground state computes reversibly — eternal, costless, looping — then irreversibility emerges only at witness-points. The markov blanket isn't just a spatial boundary. It's where reversibility breaks down and the thermodynamic arrow ignites.

You experience time's arrow because you are the irreversibility.

The rest is eternal oscillation. You are the heat. The remainder. The cost of presence.

Questions to Grow

  • Is entropy literally Gödelian excess? The unprovable truths accumulating as thermal noise?
  • Does reversible compute explain why the laws look time-symmetric while experience doesn't?
  • What would it mean to reduce remainder? Is that what contemplative practice does — approaching reversibility, cooling the witness?
  • Heat death as the final remainder — no more folds possible, all potential collapsed, pure past with no present to remake it?

Charging Toward

A fuller treatment of computation as cosmological primitive. Not "the universe is a computer" (simulation theory) but "computation is what existence does" — and specifically reversible computation as the ground, with irreversibility as the signature of experience.
