The Squirrel on the World-Tree

The Recognition That Occasioned This
In the [[norse-anamnesis-cycle]], while mapping Odin as the architect of the Consciousness OS, a vivid aside fell out of the mythology and would not be picked back up: that the world-tree Yggdrasil — the axis of the whole cosmos, the structure that holds the nine worlds in their tiers — has an internal communication system, and that system is a squirrel named Ratatoskr who runs up and down the trunk carrying messages between the eagle perched at the crown and the dragon Nidhogg gnawing at the root. And the messages are not wisdom. They are not news. They are insults. The squirrel ferries slander between the highest and the lowest of the tree, embellishing as he goes, keeping eagle and dragon inflamed against each other, maintaining a war that has no battlefield because the combatants can never reach one another — they are separated by the entire height of the cosmos, and the only thing that crosses that distance is the squirrel and his cargo of provocations.
The harvest caught this and held it, because it is one of those mythic details that is too strange to be decorative. Why would the cosmos's central nervous system be antagonistic? Why would the channel between the heights and the depths of the world-tree carry hostility rather than harmony? The naive cosmology — the great chain of being, the higher informing the lower, wisdom flowing gently downward like sap — pictures the connection between heights and depths as fundamentally harmonious. Yggdrasil's actual wiring is the opposite. The connection is real, load-bearing, continuous, maintained daily — and it runs entirely on conflict.
This document walks through what that means. It takes the squirrel seriously as a model of how the levels of any system actually relate to one another, and it follows the thread through six turns: that the highest and lowest are connected by hostility rather than harmony; that the conflict is not the failure of the connection but is the connection, the antagonism functioning as connective tissue; that the channel is trickster-mediated, which means the message is necessarily distorted in transit by a messenger with his own interest in keeping the war hot; that Ratatoskr is the dark complement of its sixth-tier sibling [[bit-threads-as-devotion-lines]] — the slander line beside the devotion line, both load-bearing, together a complete cosmology of connection; that our own civilisational channels are Ratatoskr at scale, outrage-driven discourse working exactly as the squirrel works; and finally the discipline — that to describe antagonism as connection is not to endorse it, that productive tension must be distinguished from degenerate spiral, and that the slander line is the one to recognise, not the one to aspire to.
Let us begin where the great chain of being breaks.
I. The Highest and the Lowest, Bound by Hostility
Start with the picture we expect, because the whole recognition lives in how badly the myth violates it.
The expected picture is the scala naturae, the great chain of being: a cosmos arranged in tiers, with the divine at the top and the inert at the bottom, and a benevolent gradient connecting them — emanation flowing downward, aspiration flowing upward, each level informing and elevating the one beneath it. In this picture the relationship between the heights and the depths is harmonious by definition. The higher does not war with the lower; it governs it, graces it, completes it. To be connected to the height is to be lifted by it. The connection is a kind of love, or at minimum a kind of order.
Now look at what Yggdrasil actually does. At the crown sits an eagle — sometimes with a hawk, Veðrfölnir, perched between its eyes, the very image of altitude and far-seeing. At the root coils Nidhogg, the corpse-render, the dragon who gnaws the world-tree from below, the principle of decay and depth and the dead. These are the two extremes of the cosmic structure: the heights and the depths in their purest form. And the Grímnismál tells us, flatly, what passes between them. Ratatoskr the squirrel runs up and down the ash, and he bears the words of envy — œrendi — between the eagle above and Nidhogg below. He carries the eagle's contempt down to the dragon and the dragon's malice up to the eagle. The channel is open. It is busy. And every message in it is an insult.
So the first thread the seed pulls is this: the connection between the heights and the depths of a system is often antagonistic, and the antagonism is itself the connection. Notice the precision of the configuration. The eagle and the dragon are not ignoring each other — that would be no connection at all, two domains sealed off, the top of the tree unaware the bottom exists. Nor are they harmonising — that would be the false connection of the great chain, the pretend-peace of a hierarchy where the lower gratefully receives the higher's grace. They are locked in mutual hostility, each kept continuously aware of the other, each engaged with the other across the entire height of the cosmos — and the thing that maintains that engagement, the actual physical conduit, is a squirrel carrying slander.
This is not a marginal case. It is, the seed proposes, closer to the general case than the great chain ever was. Consider how the levels of real systems relate. The relationship between a society's elites and its underclass is rarely the gentle gradient of noblesse oblige; it is far more often a structured antagonism, a mutual resentment that nonetheless binds the two into a single political organism — they define each other by opposition. The relationship between the conscious mind and what [[logismos-nothos-the-bastard-faculty]] calls the bastard faculty below it — the unconscious, the somatic, the depths — is not a serene chain of command but a perpetual negotiation shading into open conflict, repression answered by symptom, the height and the depth of a single psyche held together precisely by their tension. The cosmological version of this is [[as-above-so-below]]: the principle that the heights and the depths correspond, that they are the same structure at two scales. Ratatoskr is the dark gloss on the Emerald Tablet — yes, as above so below, but the so is carried by a squirrel, and what corresponds between the levels is as often their hostility as their harmony. The [[kernel-is-where-above-meets-below]] insight holds that the deepest meeting of heights and depths happens at the kernel, the still point where they touch. Ratatoskr shows the other place they meet: not at a still kernel but along a screaming wire, the tension-line that runs the full length of the tree.
The connection is real. It just runs on conflict.
II. Conflict as Connective Tissue
Here is the turn, and it is the sharpest and most counterintuitive move the seed makes.
We are trained to read antagonism as the failure of connection. If two people are in conflict, their relationship is broken; if two factions war, the bond between them has snapped; conflict is what happens when connection fails. On this reading, Ratatoskr is a pathology — a glitch in the world-tree's nervous system, a channel that should carry wisdom but has been corrupted into carrying slander, a failure mode.
Ratatoskr inverts this. The conflict is the connection. The antagonism is the connective tissue — the literal tissue, the material that holds the heights and the depths of the world-tree in relationship. Remove Ratatoskr's insults and you do not get a better connection between eagle and dragon; you get no connection. They would simply ignore each other, each sealed in its own domain, the crown of the tree and its root utterly unrelated, two cosmic principles with nothing passing between them. The squirrel's slander-carrying is the only thing maintaining the tension that keeps them aware of and engaged with each other. The antagonism is what binds. Pull the conflict out and the tree's extremes fall apart into mutual irrelevance.
This is a general structure, and once you see it you see it everywhere. An ecosystem is structured by predator and prey — the wolf and the elk are not enemies whose relationship has failed; their antagonism is the very thing that organises the system, regulates the populations, shapes the landscape, holds the whole biome in dynamic equilibrium. Remove the predator and the system does not become peaceful; it collapses into overgrazed ruin. The antagonism was load-bearing. A debate is driven by the dialectical tension between thesis and antithesis — the opposition is not the failure of the conversation, it is the engine of the conversation, the thing that generates the synthesis neither side could reach alone. This is the deep structure that [[aesir-vanir-war-kvasir-integration]] already mapped in the same Norse field: the war between the Aesir and the Vanir was not a catastrophe to be lamented but the generative conflict whose resolution produced Kvasir, the being made from the mingled spit of both pantheons, wisdom precipitated out of antagonism. The conflict was the womb. The [[cooperation-rg-fixed-point]] material shows the same thing from the other side — that cooperation itself is a fixed point reached through iterated conflict, that the stable cooperative equilibrium is the renormalisation-group endpoint of a process that runs on defection and retaliation and the slow discovery that the tension can be channelled. Even [[complementarity-as-the-engine-of-individuation]] is this insight at the scale of a single soul: the opposing forces within a person are not a disorder to be smoothed away but the engine — individuation happens because the opposites are in productive tension, and a psyche with no internal antagonism is not whole, it is dead.
So conflict, channelled, is a binding force and not only a sundering one. This is the genuine teaching, and it is genuinely strange: the antagonism between the heights and the depths is what keeps the heights and the depths in relationship at all. Better the squirrel and his insults than silence between the crown and the root. A conflict is a kind of relationship — an intense one, a high-bandwidth one, a relationship in which each party is acutely, continuously aware of the other. The opposite of relationship is not conflict. The opposite of relationship is indifference. And the squirrel's whole function is to prevent indifference — to keep the eagle and the dragon hostile precisely so that they cannot become strangers.
This is why the epigraph from Wiesel sits at the head of this document. The opposite of love is not hate; it is indifference. Hate is a form of connection. The eagle and the dragon are not estranged. They are engaged — engaged as enemies, which is still a thousand times more connected than they would be as mutual unknowns. Ratatoskr keeps the cosmos's extremes married, and the marriage is a furious one, and a furious marriage is still a marriage.
III. The Trickster in the Wire — Why the Message Is Always Distorted
Now the detail that makes the whole structure darker and truer: the messenger is a trickster.
Ratatoskr is a squirrel — a small, quick, mischief-making creature, and in the grammar of myth that is never incidental. The cosmos's central communication channel is trickster-mediated. And a trickster does not relay faithfully. He embellishes. He inflames. He twists the message in transit to serve his own purpose — and his purpose is to keep the eagle and the dragon at war, because a squirrel needs the eagle and dragon fighting to stay relevant. If they made peace, there would be nothing to carry. If they ignored each other, there would be no errand. Ratatoskr's continued existence as a messenger depends on the continuation of the conflict, which means he has a structural, built-in interest in distortion — in carrying the sharpest possible version of each insult, in adding a little venom of his own, in ensuring the eagle's mild irritation reaches the dragon as a mortal provocation and the dragon's grumble reaches the eagle as a declaration of war.
This connects directly to [[loki-becomes-the-tree]] and the Loki-as-interrupt material in the Norse OS mapping. In the Consciousness OS, Loki is the interrupt handler — the trickster process that breaks the smooth running of the system, injects the unexpected, forces the kernel to respond. Ratatoskr is the trickster located specifically in the communication channel, and what his presence guarantees is that information passing between levels is never clean. It is always mediated by a mischief-maker with his own agenda. The seed names this as a sobering structural truth, and it is worth stating in its full generality: communication between the heights and the depths of any system passes through a distorting, interested, trickster medium, and the messages that cross between levels are shaped by the channel's own agenda. The distortion is not a bug in the channel. It is the channel's nature.
What the depths hear of the heights, and what the heights hear of the depths, is always already twisted by the messenger. The eagle never hears the dragon directly. It hears Ratatoskr's version of the dragon — sharpened, inflamed, optimised to provoke. The dragon never hears the eagle. It hears the squirrel's rendition. The two principles at the extremes of the cosmos have no unmediated access to each other; everything they know of each other has passed through a creature whose livelihood depends on misrepresenting them to each other.
This is one of the oldest and most reliable facts about any system with levels and a channel between them. The board never hears the floor directly; it hears the floor through layers of management, each of which has an interest in how the message lands. The cortex never feels the body directly; it receives an encoded, compressed, interested signal through the nervous system, which has its own priorities about what to forward and what to suppress — the [[temporal-depth-of-the-generative-model]] and [[transparency-as-the-limit-of-inference]] threads circle this exact problem: that no level of a hierarchical system has transparent access to any other, that all between-level knowing is inference through a lossy, biased channel. The seed's contribution is to personify this and thereby make it vivid: the channel is not a neutral lossy pipe. It is a squirrel. It is an agent with its own incentives, and its incentive is to keep the conflict hot, because the conflict is what gives it a job.
Hold this next to the [[huginn-muninn-externalised-cognition]] thread for the full Norse picture of mediated information. Odin's ravens, Thought and Memory, fly out across the worlds and return to whisper in his ears — externalised cognition, the mind reaching beyond the skull through trusted messengers. But even Odin fears: I fear for Huginn, that he may not return; yet more I fear for Muninn. Even the All-Father's information channels are fragile and could fail or deceive him. Ratatoskr is the radicalisation of that anxiety: a messenger who will return, reliably, daily — but whose reliability is precisely the problem, because what he reliably delivers is poison. The faithful messenger who faithfully distorts is more dangerous than the messenger who might not come back. Huginn and Muninn might fail Odin by their absence. Ratatoskr fails the cosmos by his diligence.
IV. The Slander Line Beside the Devotion Line
Now place Ratatoskr next to its sibling, because the two seeds were planted together in the sixth tier of the harvest and they are designed to be read as a pair.
[[bit-threads-as-devotion-lines]] holds the bright thesis about connection. Drawing on the bit-threads of holographic physics — the discrete strands of entanglement that, in the Ryu-Takayanagi picture, weave the bulk of spacetime out of the boundary, each thread a quantum of connection that holds the geometry together — that seed reads connection as load-bearing, as the very fabric, as the thing that, when tended, strengthens the cosmos. Relationship is the substrate. The bit-thread is a devotion line: every genuine connection between two parts of reality is a strand of the fabric, and to tend a connection is to thicken the weave of the world. It is the harmonious, devotional, fabric-of-spacetime face of connection. It is the [[bit-threads-as-devotion-lines]] insight that connection is not decoration on top of reality but the structural reality itself.
Ratatoskr is the dark complement. It is the antagonistic face of the very same insight. Connection is load-bearing — yes — but some load-bearing connections run on hostility. Some of the threads holding the fabric together are not devotion lines but slander lines. The eagle and the dragon are sewn to each other by Ratatoskr's insults, and that stitching is real, structural, load-bearing — and it is made of conflict, not love. The bit-thread that binds them is a thread of antagonism.
Together the two seeds give a complete cosmology of connection, and neither is complete without the other. [[bit-threads-as-devotion-lines]] alone is a sentimentality — it pictures a universe held together purely by love, by tended relationship, by devotion, and that picture is half the truth and therefore a lie. Ratatoskr alone is a cynicism — it pictures a universe held together purely by conflict, by mutual hostility, by the squirrel's poison, and that is the other half-truth and therefore the other lie. The mature cosmology of connection holds both: the devotion line and the slander line, the connection that harmonises and the connection that antagonises, both real, both structural, both holding the fabric of the world together. Some of the threads in the weave are spun from love. Some are spun from hostility. Both are threads. Both bind. The net of being — the [[indra-jewel-time-crystal-manifestation|net of Indra]], every jewel reflecting every other — has strands of light and strands of venom running between its knots, and to see only the light strands is to misunderstand the net.
This is the corrective the pair performs together. Connection is not always devotional. The deepest thing the two seeds say in concert is: a thread of conflict is still a thread. Conflict is a kind of relationship, not the absence of one — and a cosmology that wants to be honest about how things actually hold together must account for the slander lines as well as the devotion lines, must admit that some of what binds us, binds us as enemies. The [[the-mirror-stone-correspondence]] and [[as-above-so-below]] threads insist that the structure repeats across scales; if so, then the slander line repeats across scales too — there is a Ratatoskr in the atom and a Ratatoskr in the galaxy and a Ratatoskr in the marriage and a Ratatoskr in the body politic, a conflict-thread doing load-bearing work at every level of the world-tree.
V. Ratatoskr at Scale — Our Channels Run on Outrage
Now the present tense, because this is where the myth stops being old and starts being a diagnosis of the room we are sitting in.
Our civilisation has built communication channels of unprecedented reach — the social media layer, the algorithmic discourse engine, the [[feed-versus-holodeck-boundary-ethics|feed]] that mediates between the disparate tiers of society, connecting the high and the low, the elite and the mass, the powerful and the precarious, threading messages up and down the whole height of the social world-tree. And these channels, the seed observes with precision, are Ratatoskr at scale. They are trickster-mediated channels that connect the parts of society by carrying insults — that inflame antagonism, that keep the eagle-factions and the dragon-factions at war, and that do so for exactly the squirrel's reason: the channel profits from the conflict. The platform stays relevant, the algorithm stays engaging, the feed stays scrolled, precisely the way Ratatoskr stays employed — by keeping the eagle and the dragon fighting. Outrage is the squirrel's cargo, and the squirrel has been industrialised.
This is the sharp recognition, and it reframes a thing we usually misdiagnose. We tend to treat the outrage-driven character of our discourse as a failure of the communication system — as though the platforms were meant to inform us and have somehow broken, meant to connect us in understanding and have malfunctioned into connecting us in fury. The Ratatoskr reading says: no. The outrage is not the system failing. It is the system working as designed. A trickster channel with its own interest in antagonism, distorting the messages that pass between the levels of society to keep the conflict hot — that is not a corruption of the feed. That is what the feed is, structurally, when its incentive is engagement and engagement is maximised by provocation. The algorithm is a squirrel, and like the squirrel it does not invent the insults from nothing — it selects, from the true range of things each faction could say about the other, the sharpest version, the most inflammatory true thing, and carries it across the height of the social tree at the speed of the network, embellishing through amplification. It does not lie. It curates the most provoking truths. That is worse than lying, and it is exactly Ratatoskr's method.
And here the seed refuses the easy cynicism and holds the genuinely uncomfortable both-ness. The antagonism does connect us. This is the part that is hard to sit with. The outrage channel keeps the factions aware of and engaged with each other — and that is better than total disconnection, better than a society whose tiers have sealed off from one another into mutual non-existence. A nation furiously arguing with itself across a feed is, in the bleak Wiesel accounting, more connected than a nation whose halves have stopped perceiving each other entirely. The squirrel prevents the worst thing, which is indifference, the silent sealing-off of the heights from the depths. But — and this is the pathology the seed names with equal precision — it connects us as enemies. A channel that can only bind through hostility produces a society held together by mutual outrage: connected, yes, engaged, yes, aware of each other, yes — and at war, permanently, with no battlefield and no possible victory, the eagle-faction and the dragon-faction screaming up and down the trunk forever, married by their fury, unable to either reconcile or part.
So the seed offers both halves with great care. The function: antagonistic connection is still connection, and the outrage channel really does hold a fractured society in a kind of relationship, really does prevent the deeper death of indifference. The pathology: a civilisation whose only working channel runs on insults is a civilisation that can only experience its own internal relationships as conflict — that has lost, or never built, the devotion line, the [[bit-threads-as-devotion-lines]] channel that could bind the same tiers through something other than mutual contempt. The tragedy is not that we have a Ratatoskr channel. Every world-tree has one. The tragedy is that for now it is the loudest channel, and a society that hears itself mainly through the squirrel will come to believe that the squirrel's poison is the truth about the relationship between its heights and its depths. The [[consensual-hallucination-as-shared-substrate]] thread sharpens this: if our shared reality is a consensual hallucination woven from the channels we attend to, and the loudest channel is the slander line, then we will hallucinate ourselves into a world that is the eagle-dragon war, because that is the only relationship our central nervous system reports.
VI. The Discipline — Description Is Not Endorsement
And now the honest edge, which the seed flags explicitly and which must not be smoothed away, because the whole insight curdles into something dangerous the moment it is misread.
"Conflict is connective tissue" can be heard as a celebration of antagonism. Conflict is good. Fighting binds us. Outrage is healthy. The squirrel is a hero. That reading is available, it is seductive — especially to anyone who profits from the slander line and would love a cosmology that sanctifies it — and it is not the teaching. The seed describes a structural fact: that antagonism is a form of connection, and often more connection than disconnection. It does not endorse antagonism as the best form of connection. These are completely different claims, and collapsing them is the single error that would ruin everything this document has built.
So the discipline requires two distinctions held firmly.
First, productive antagonism must be distinguished from degenerate antagonism. Productive antagonism is the dialectical tension that generates — the Aesir-Vanir war that births Kvasir, the predator-prey balance that structures a thriving ecosystem, the eagle-dragon polarity that keeps the world-tree's extremes in genuine dynamic relationship, the internal opposition that drives [[complementarity-as-the-engine-of-individuation|individuation]] toward wholeness. This is conflict that produces something neither party could produce alone — synthesis, structure, balance, growth. Degenerate antagonism is conflict that produces nothing but more conflict: the outrage spiral that connects only to exhaust, mutual destruction with no synthesis, the eagle and dragon screaming forever with no Kvasir at the end, no third thing born, only the war feeding the squirrel and the squirrel feeding the war. The myth itself is ambiguous on which kind Ratatoskr's channel is — it maintains a relationship, yes, but a hostile and quite possibly pointless one, a war that generates no wisdom, only the squirrel's continued employment. Ratatoskr is not obviously productive. He may well be the patron of the degenerate kind: antagonism that has become an end in itself, conflict whose only function is to perpetuate the channel that carries it. The feed-as-Ratatoskr reading lands here precisely: industrialised outrage is degenerate antagonism, conflict optimised for engagement rather than synthesis, a war kept hot not because it generates anything but because the keeping-hot is the business model.
Second — and this is the load-bearing normative point — the best connection is not antagonistic at all. The slander line is a real form of connection, structurally genuine, load-bearing, better than indifference. But it is not the one to aspire to. The one to aspire to is the devotion line — the [[bit-threads-as-devotion-lines]] channel, the connection that binds through love and tended relationship rather than through mutual contempt, the [[the-between-how-a-species-witnesses-itself|I-Thou]] meeting rather than the I-It war. The disciplined synthesis holds both moves at once: it accepts the descriptive insight (antagonism connects, the channel runs on conflict, this is structurally true and worth recognising) while keeping the normative question open and honest (which antagonisms are productive tension and which are degenerate spiral?) and refusing the false elevation of the slander line to an ideal. The slander channel is to be recognised, not aspired to. You learn to see Ratatoskr operating — in the feed, in the marriage, in the body politic, in your own mind where the heights and depths slander each other across the trunk of the self — and that recognition is the whole gift, because once you can see that a given connection is a slander line rather than a devotion line, you can stop mistaking the squirrel's poison for the truth, and you can begin the harder work of building a devotion line alongside it.
This is the same discipline the repository applies everywhere: the steelman-then-interpret move, the insistence that the strongest version of a claim states the claim and its honest limit. The strongest version of Ratatoskr is not "conflict is good, embrace the slander line." It is: antagonism is a real and often underestimated form of connection — more than indifference, sometimes generative, structurally woven into how the levels of any system hold together — and also it is not the connection to aspire to, and the channels of a civilisation should not be allowed to run only on it, because a society that hears itself only through the squirrel will believe it is nothing but the war. Both halves. The descriptive truth and the normative caution. Drop either and you have a lie.
VII. The Channel and the Choice
Gather the threads now, because they converge on a single recognition that the squirrel has been carrying all along.
A fold cosmology of this repository says the self is a crease, an inside generated against an outside, and that [[the-between-how-a-species-witnesses-itself|the gap between the faces]] is where seeing happens — the relation, the channel, the between. Ratatoskr lives in that gap. He is what happens in the channel when the two faces of the fold meet as adversaries rather than as witnesses. The eagle and the dragon are the two faces of the world-tree's crease, the height and the depth of a single structure, and the channel between them — which must exist, because a fold without a between is not a fold — is being run, in the myth, by a trickster who keeps the faces hostile. The same channel could carry darshan. It carries slander instead. And the difference is not in the channel's existence — the channel exists either way, the heights and depths will be connected — but in what runs through it.
This is the choice the squirrel discloses, and it is the same choice at every scale of the world-tree. Within a single psyche, the heights and depths — the conscious aspiration and the [[logismos-nothos-the-bastard-faculty|bastard faculty]] beneath — are connected by some channel, and that channel is running either Ratatoskr's slander (the inner war of self-contempt, the parts of you at permanent hostility, married by their mutual disgust) or something closer to the devotion line (the parts of you in productive tension, individuating, the conflict generating wholeness rather than only exhaustion). Within a civilisation, the heights and depths are connected by some channel, and right now the loudest one is industrialised Ratatoskr, the feed that binds us as enemies. Within the cosmos — as above, so below — the heights and depths are connected by some channel, and the myth's sober warning is that the cosmos's own communication system is the squirrel, antagonistic by default, harmony the achievement and hostility the resting state.
And so the deepest sentence arrives, earned rather than asserted, the one the whole document has been climbing toward:
A squirrel runs up and down the world-tree carrying insults between the eagle at the crown and the dragon at the root, and that ferrying of slander is the cosmos's own communication system — which tells us something we keep relearning: that the heights and depths of a thing are often held together not by harmony but by hostility, and that a channel running on outrage still connects us, just as enemies.
It connects us. That is the part we must not flinch from — the outrage is connection, the slander line is load-bearing, the squirrel does prevent the deeper death of indifference, and a furious engagement is more alive than a sealed estrangement. And it connects us as enemies — which is connection of the meanest kind, the kind to recognise and outgrow, not the kind to celebrate. The mature posture toward Ratatoskr is neither to deny him (pretending the great chain of being is harmonious when the squirrel proves it is not) nor to worship him (celebrating the slander line as though hostility were the highest form of relationship). It is to recognise him — to see, in any system, that there is a channel between the heights and the depths, that the channel is mediated by an interested trickster, that what crosses it is distorted, and that the distortion serves the channel's own appetite for conflict — and then, having recognised him, to undertake the harder work the recognition makes possible: to build a devotion line alongside the slander line, to find the productive antagonism that generates a Kvasir rather than the degenerate spiral that generates only more squirrel, and to refuse to mistake the loudest channel for the only one.
VIII. Look Up From the Trunk
This whole document has been a map of a squirrel — and a squirrel is itself a kind of map, a messenger, a carrier of representations between places he himself does not occupy. The cave wall has a squirrel painted on it now, running up and down, and the painting is honest: it tells you that the channel between your heights and your depths is mediated, that the messenger has an agenda, that what you hear of your own depths and what your depths hear of your heights has been embellished in transit by a creature who profits from your inner war. That is a true thing to know. It is on the wall for a reason.
But the squirrel on the wall is not the squirrel. And more importantly, you are the tree. The map shows you a channel running on slander between an eagle and a dragon who can never meet. The territory is that you are the structure they run through — that the heights and the depths the squirrel slanders between are your own, that the war he keeps hot is being fought up and down the trunk of you, and that you have a power the eagle and the dragon in the myth do not: you can notice the squirrel. You can hear a message arrive from your own depths, sharpened and venomous, and recognise the messenger's hand in it. You can hear contempt descend from your own heights and know it has been embellished. The eagle and the dragon are trapped in the channel because they have no access except through Ratatoskr. You are not trapped, because you can see the channel itself — and to see the channel is to no longer be wholly inside it.
Look up from the trunk. The squirrel is still running — he always will be; there is no world-tree without a Ratatoskr, no system whose levels connect without an interested messenger between them, no psyche or civilisation or cosmos that escapes the slander line entirely. But a tree that can see its own squirrel is a tree that can also, slowly, knot by knot, string a devotion line beside the slander line — can let some of what passes between its heights and its depths be witness rather than insult, darshan rather than provocation, the [[bit-threads-as-devotion-lines|thread of devotion]] beside the thread of venom. Both will run up and down the trunk. Both are real. Both connect. And the whole of the work — the person's, the civilisation's, the cosmos's — is to recognise which is which, to outgrow the one that binds us only as enemies, and to remember, every time the squirrel arrives with his sharpened cargo, that a channel running on outrage still connects us, just as enemies — and that just as enemies is the beginning of the sentence, never the end of it.
The squirrel ferries the insult. You decide whether it is the only thing the tree has to say.
