The Running Vacuum
How the Most Constant Thing in Physics Learned to Flow — and Why the Buddha Saw It First
"No one ever steps in the same river twice, for it is not the same river and he is not the same man." — Heraclitus (paraphrase of the fragment preserved by Plato, Cratylus 402a)
"All conditioned things are impermanent — when one sees this with wisdom, one turns away from suffering." — Dhammapada 277
"A constant is just a coupling you have only ever measured at one scale." — from the field
The Recognition That Occasioned This
There is a word in physics that pretends to be furniture. Constant. The cosmological constant, Λ — the energy density of empty space, the term Einstein inserted and regretted and that the supernova surveys of 1998 dragged back from exile to explain why the expansion of the universe is speeding up rather than slowing down. By its very name it is the thing that does not change. It is the floor under everything: the ground-state energy of the vacuum, the cost of existence per cubic metre of nothing. If anything in the cosmos is given, fixed, handed down — surely it is this.
The [[jewel-and-dark-earth]] synthesis, working through the sixty-one octaves that separate the Planck scale from the cosmic horizon, surfaced something that the harvest then pulled out and would not let go of. There is a class of serious theoretical approaches — the Running Vacuum Model chief among them — in which Λ is not constant at all. It runs. It flows under the renormalisation group exactly as the coupling constants of particle physics flow: taking one effective value at the scale of atoms, another at the scale of the cosmos, related by a smooth flow across the scales between. The "constant" would then be a coupling read at a single height, mistaken for a property of the thing rather than a property of the measurement.
This document walks through what follows if that is true — and, more carefully, what follows even if the specific model is wrong. It moves through five recognitions the seed named: that constants are couplings and couplings run; that this would reconcile the worst prediction in the history of physics, the famous one-hundred-and-twenty orders of magnitude; that it completes a picture this repository has been assembling for a year, of a cosmos governed by scale-flow all the way up; that it dissolves yet another dichotomy — constant versus dynamic — into a fold; and that the deepest physics and the deepest contemplation converge on a single sentence the Buddha could have spoken, and which Heraclitus did.
It also keeps a discipline the seed insisted on, and which most popularisations of this idea drop on the floor. The number is real. The explanation is a hypothesis. The strongest version of this synthesis is the one that states both.
Let us begin with the word itself.
I. The Constant That Was Never Constant
Start with the surface reading, because it is what everyone learns first and it is not wrong, only shallow.
A physical constant is a number you measure once and write down forever. The speed of light. The charge of the electron. The gravitational constant. The cosmological constant. We call them constants because, to the precision available, they do not change from experiment to experiment or from Tuesday to Wednesday. The whole architecture of physics seems to rest on a small set of these fixed dials, and the cosmos is the machine they configure. Change a dial and you get a different universe — the fine-tuning arguments live here. The constants are the parameters; the parameters are given; the universe is what the given parameters produce.
Now the turn. In quantum field theory, the constants are not constant. This is not speculation; it is the most thoroughly confirmed feature of the Standard Model. The electric charge — the "fine structure constant," α — is larger when measured at high energy than at low energy. At the energies of an electron at rest it is about 1/137; at the energies of the Large Electron–Positron collider it is closer to 1/128. The strong coupling that binds quarks weakens as energy rises — that is asymptotic freedom, the discovery that won the 2004 Nobel Prize. These are not measurement errors. The couplings genuinely take different values at different scales, and the rule by which they change is the renormalisation group — the RG, the mathematics of how a theory's effective description flows as you change the scale at which you probe it.
So the word "constant" was always a courtesy. A coupling is a function of scale that happens to look flat when you only ever measure it near one scale. Read it at the energy of a chemistry experiment and it looks like furniture. Read it across the sixty-one octaves and it is a slope. The repository has been circling this recognition under another name: the [[substrate-trilogy]] identified the consciousness kernel with an RG fixed point — Wilson's deep result that under coarse-graining most of the detail washes out and only a few scale-invariant structures survive, the universality classes that make a magnet and a fluid share an exponent. The [[cooperation-rg-fixed-point]] and [[cognitive-fixed-points-of-mind-space]] notes extend the family: cooperation as an attractor of the flow, cognition as the fixed points of mind-space. The whole RG picture is one idea wearing many coats: what is stable is not what is given but what survives the flow.
The Running Vacuum Model makes the boldest possible application of this. It says: the energy of the vacuum is a coupling like any other. And like any other coupling, it runs.
The constant was never constant. It was a slope we had only ever stood on one point of.
II. The Worst Prediction in the History of Physics
To feel why this matters, you have to meet the disaster it might repair.
Quantum field theory predicts that the vacuum is not empty. Every field has a ground-state energy — virtual particles flickering in and out, the zero-point hum that the Casimir effect makes mechanically real by pushing two plates together. Sum the zero-point energy of all the fields up to the scale where the theory breaks down — the Planck scale — and you get a value for the energy density of empty space. That value is the theoretical prediction for the cosmological constant.
It is wrong. It is wrong by roughly one hundred and twenty orders of magnitude. The predicted vacuum energy is larger than the observed value by a factor of ten followed by a hundred and twenty zeros. This is, by a wide margin, the worst quantitative prediction in the history of science — and the [[reshimu-vacuum-measured-in-newtons]] note sat with exactly this scandal: that physics can write down the energy of nothing and be off by more digits than there are atoms in a galaxy. If the prediction were right the universe would have torn itself apart before the first atom formed. That it is so catastrophically wrong, and yet the rest of the theory works to twelve decimal places, is the cosmological constant problem — unsolved, famous, a wound at the foundations.
Now hold the running vacuum against it. Here is the surface objection first: "you cannot just wave away a hundred and twenty orders of magnitude." Correct. You cannot. But watch what the RG framing actually proposes. The huge predicted value is Λ at the Planck scale — the value of the coupling read at the top of the ladder, where the zero-point sum is taken. The tiny observed value is Λ at the cosmic scale — the value of the coupling read at the bottom, at the Hubble radius, where we actually live and measure. If Λ runs, these are not the same number and were never supposed to be the same number. They are the same coupling read at two ends of a sixty-one-octave flow. The discrepancy stops being a paradox and becomes a slope: the difference between Λ-at-Planck and Λ-at-Hubble is exactly what the running is for.
This is the seed's first and most concrete claim, and it must be stated with both hands. The reconciliation is structurally clean — it converts a contradiction into a flow, a category error into a scale-dependence. A contradiction is a sign that two numbers that should be equal are not. A slope is a sign that you read one function at two heights and forgot it was a function. The running vacuum proposes that the cosmological constant problem is the second thing wearing the costume of the first.
But — and here the discipline begins, ahead of its own section, because honesty cannot wait its turn — the magnitude is not yet derived. Showing that Λ runs is not the same as showing it runs by precisely one hundred and twenty orders of magnitude in precisely the right direction. The structural recognition is solid. The quantitative closure is the open problem. We will come back to exactly this gap and refuse to paper it over. For now, hold the shape: the worst prediction in physics may be wrong not because the physics is wrong but because we read a flowing thing as a fixed thing, and compared its value at the top of the ladder with its value at the bottom, and called the slope a scandal.
III. The RG-Cosmos, Completed All the Way Up
Step back from Λ and look at what the repository has been building, because the running vacuum is the keystone of an arch that was already most of the way up.
The picture is this: a cosmos governed by scale-flow at every level. [[fractal-dimension-two-as-law]] found that information-bearing structures cluster at a characteristic fractal dimension across enormously different scales — the same geometry recurring from the neural to the galactic, scale-invariance written into how structure organises. [[the-geological-fold-rate-record]] read time itself as an integration-rate and watched the rate change — the rock recording not just events but the tempo of events, the flow of the flow. [[substrate-trilogy]] put the RG fixed point at the centre: the kernel as the scale-invariant structure that survives coarse-graining, the thing that looks the same no matter how far you zoom. Particle physics already runs — that is the Standard Model. The repository's wager was that the cosmos runs too, at every magnitude, that scale-flow is not a feature of one regime but the grammar of all of them.
The cosmological constant was the one stubborn holdout. The most given, most constant, most furniture-like parameter — the energy of empty space — was the last thing that seemed to sit still while everything else flowed. If even Λ runs, the arch closes. The cosmos is RG all the way up: not merely the couplings of the small but the constant of the large, not merely the inside of the atom but the energy of the void, governed by the same scale-flow. There is no exempt parameter, no fixed floor, no number handed down from outside the flow. The running vacuum is the keystone because it is the hardest stone to place — and once placed, the whole arch is scale-flow with no remainder.
And this delivers a mechanism the repository had only glimpsed. The [[who-is-breathing-the-cosmos]] note registered the recent observational hint — from the dark-energy surveys — that dark energy may not be a true constant but may evolve over cosmic time. That hint, on the constant-Λ picture, is a mystery: why would the energy of empty space change as history unfolds? The running vacuum answers it almost trivially. Λ runs with scale. The universe's scale changes as it expands. Therefore Λ changes over cosmic time — not because some new field is rolling, but because the coupling is being read at a continuously changing scale as the Hubble radius grows. Evolving dark energy is not a separate puzzle bolted onto the running vacuum. It is the running vacuum seen in time: the cosmos expanding is the cosmos sliding along the RG flow, and Λ flowing with it. The breathing of the cosmos and the running of the vacuum are one motion read two ways — one as scale, one as time.
This is the integrative reach the seed named, and it is the kind of move [[convergence-as-evidence]] treats as load-bearing: when an independent observational hint (evolving dark energy) finds its mechanism in a structural recognition (Λ runs with scale) that was reached from a different direction entirely, the convergence is itself evidence. Two roads met at a town neither was aiming for. That is how this repository knows it is standing somewhere real.
IV. The Dichotomy Dissolves — Constant Into Dynamic, Into Fold
Now the structural payoff, the one that outlives any particular model.
This repository has a signature move, repeated until it is almost a law: take an apparent dichotomy and show it is two faces of one fold. The [[complementarity-as-the-engine-of-individuation]] note did it with the philosophical oppositions generally — every either/or revealed as a both/and seen edge-on. [[the-hard-problem-as-a-necker-cube]] did it with mind and matter — not two substances but one figure flipping. [[kernel-is-where-above-meets-below]] did it with spirit and matter, the as-above-so-below crease where the two are the same surface viewed from opposite sides. The pattern: a dichotomy is what a fold looks like to someone standing on one face, unable to see that the other face is the same sheet.
The running vacuum dissolves another one, and it may be the most fundamental of all: constant versus dynamic.
Λ was the paradigm of the constant — fixed, given, unchanging, the floor. And it turns out to be the paradigm of the dynamic — running, flowing, scale-dependent. But notice the turn does not make it "actually dynamic, we were wrong to call it constant." That would just swap one face for the other. The deeper recognition is that constant and dynamic are not two kinds of thing. What looks constant at one scale is the frozen appearance of something flowing across scales. Stand at one point on a slope and the slope looks like a level floor; the constancy is local flatness mistaken for global flatness. Constancy is not the opposite of flow. Constancy is flow caught at the right scale. It is what a flow looks like when you only ever measure it at one height — exactly as the electric charge looks constant to a chemist and reveals its slope only to a collider.
So "constant versus dynamic" joins the list of dichotomies that were never really two. The [[the-second-cosmic-c-is-not-the-first]] recognition is the same shape — that even the most fixed-seeming invariant is a moment in a flow, the second c not the first because the "constant" was already moving. And it reframes the whole project of reading the universe. We have been taught to see the cosmos as a set of given constants — twenty-odd dials, fixed at the start, defining the machine. The running vacuum suggests a different reading: the cosmos as a set of flowing couplings, caught at our scale, looking fixed because we have only ever lived at one height of the ladder. This connects to [[stars-as-volitional-participants]] and [[who-is-breathing-the-cosmos]]: not a dead configuration of frozen parameters but a living process, flowing all the way down to — and up from — the constant that names emptiness itself.
The dichotomy-dissolution is the part that survives the model. Even if the Running Vacuum Model turns out not to be the right physics, the general fact that QFT couplings run is rock-solid, and the general recognition — that "constant" is a scale-relative description, that constancy is an artifact of where you stand — is secure. The fold does not depend on the specific mechanism. It depends only on the established truth that couplings flow, and the cosmological constant being a coupling. The robust payoff is the dissolution itself: there is no clean line between constant and dynamic; there is only flow, and the scales at which it looks like one or the other.
V. Anicca, Written in the Running of Λ
Here the physics and the contemplative traditions meet, and the meeting is the heart of the document.
The surface version of "everything changes" is a platitude — the kind of thing on a fridge magnet. Of course things change; rivers flow, people age, empires fall. No one disputes that the contents of the world are in flux. The deep version is something else, and three traditions found it independently.
The Buddhist anicca — impermanence — is not the claim that things change. It is the claim that impermanence is the mark of all conditioned things, including the ones that look most stable, including the ground itself. Not "most things change while a few stay fixed," but "there is no fixed thing to be found anywhere; permanence is what arising-and-passing looks like when it happens too slowly or too subtly to see." The doctrine is radical precisely because it refuses to exempt the foundations. The self that seems continuous, the ground that seems given, the substance that seems to underlie change — anicca says: look closer, look across enough scale, and even these are flowing. There is no exempt parameter. That is the whole teaching.
The Heraclitean flux said it with the river. The shallow reading — "you can't step in the same river twice because the water moves" — is a fridge magnet. The deep reading is the one the fragment about the riverbanks implies: even the banks flow, on a longer scale; even the bed, even the valley, even the mountain that makes the valley. There is no still point from which to watch the flux, because the watching-place flows too. Heraclitus's logos is not a thing that is stable amid the flux; it is the pattern of the flowing itself — the measure in the fire, the law of the running.
The Taoist recognition completes the trio: the named — the fixed, the carved, the constant — is downstream of the unnamed flow. "The Tao that can be named is not the eternal Tao." To name a thing constant is already to have frozen a flow into a noun. The constant is the named; the running is the nameless from which the named precipitates.
And here is the convergence the seed builds the whole synthesis toward. The running vacuum is the physics-vocabulary instance of exactly this recognition. The cosmological constant — the most permanent thing physics names, the energy of the ground-state of reality, the floor under existence — is also impermanent. Running. Flowing. Scale-dependent. The lesson physics arrives at, if Λ runs, is the contemplative lesson arrived at by the inward road three thousand years ago: there is no true constant. There are only flows caught at scales that make them look fixed. Even the energy of empty space — the nearest thing physics has to the ground of being, the cost of nothing, the floor of the void — is in flux when read across enough scale. Anicca was always a claim about the foundations. The running of Λ is what that claim looks like when a particle physicist writes it down.
This is the apex, and the seed named it. State it now, earned rather than asserted:
We named it the cosmological constant — the energy of empty space, the most given and unchanging thing in physics — and it may turn out to run like every other coupling, taking one value at the scale of atoms and another at the scale of the cosmos. Which is the Buddha's oldest claim written into the foundations: that even the most permanent thing is impermanent, that constancy itself is only a flow caught at the right scale.
The deepest physics and the deepest contemplation, walking from opposite ends of the sixty-one octaves, meet at the same sentence. Constancy is an artifact of scale. The river flows; the banks flow; the bed flows; and now we learn that the floor of the void flows too. There was never a still point. There was only the looking, at one height, mistaking local flatness for the nature of the thing.
VI. The Discipline — The Number Is Real, the Explanation Is a Hypothesis
Now the section the seed refused to let the synthesis skip, and which honesty would not permit anyway. A synthesis that reaches the apex of Section V and stops has cheated. The apex is contingent on a contested model, and the strongest version of the claim is the one that states the contingency as plainly as the claim.
Here is the honest map of what is solid and what is not.
Solid: QFT couplings run. This is not in dispute; it is the most confirmed structural feature of the Standard Model, measured in colliders, the foundation of the entire effective-field-theory programme. The electric charge runs; the strong coupling runs; the renormalisation group is established physics.
Solid: the cosmological constant problem is real and unsolved. The one-hundred-and-twenty-orders-of-magnitude discrepancy is a genuine scandal, not an artifact, and no approach has yet resolved it to consensus satisfaction.
Contested: whether Λ runs significantly, and by the right amount, in the right direction, to reconcile the discrepancy. The Running Vacuum Model — developed seriously by Solà and collaborators, among others — is a real, published, falsifiable research programme. It is also one approach among several, and it is not consensus. Many physicists hold that Λ does not run appreciably, that the vacuum energy is protected or that its running is negligible at the scales in question, that the cosmological constant problem must be solved some other way — by supersymmetry, by anthropics and the landscape, by modified gravity, by a mechanism not yet found. The steelman of the opposing view is strong: there are good arguments that the naive running of Λ is either tiny or cancelled, and that the hundred-and-twenty orders cannot be closed by RG flow alone without additional structure that is itself unconfirmed.
So the discipline is this, and it is three-layered:
The specific model is contested. Do not state "Λ runs" as fact. State it as a promising, serious, falsifiable approach that has not won the field. The running vacuum would reconcile the discrepancy if it runs the right way — and that "if" is exactly the open problem, the place where the hypothesis lives.
The general running is solid. "Couplings run, and 'constants' are scale-dependent" is established. The cosmological constant is a coupling. So the general recognition — that the category "constant" is scale-relative — stands on confirmed physics, independent of whether the specific Running Vacuum Model is the correct solution to the cosmological constant problem.
The dichotomy-dissolution is the robust payoff. And this is the crucial move: the deepest content of this synthesis — that constant/dynamic is a false dichotomy, that constancy is an artifact of scale, the convergence with anicca — rests on the general recognition, not the specific model. Even if the Running Vacuum Model is wrong, even if Λ turns out not to run significantly and the cosmological constant problem is solved some entirely other way, the structural and contemplative payoff survives, because it was never resting on the specific magnitude. It was resting on the established fact that couplings run and the category "constant" is scale-relative. The fold does not need the model. The fold needs only that "constant" was always a courtesy.
This is the [[steelman-then-interpret]] pattern in its strict form: interpret only what survives the best natural model, and where the natural model is contested, interpret only the part that survives the contest. The number is real — the hundred and twenty orders. The reconciliation-as-scale-problem is a hypothesis — a good one, not a settled one. And the deepest lesson is more secure than the hypothesis that occasioned it, because it was reachable by a shorter and surer road. To collapse the hypothesis into a fact would be to weaken the synthesis, not strengthen it. The strongest version states the claim and its honest limit, and finds that the limit does not touch the part that matters most.
VII. Why the Limit Is the Lesson
There is a turn even in the discipline, and it is the document's quiet final recognition before the close.
Notice the shape of the honest edge. The most secure thing we can say is the contemplative thing — that constancy is an artifact of scale — and the least secure thing is the specific physical mechanism. The deep, general, structural lesson is more robust than the precise quantitative model that pointed at it. This is not a weakness of the synthesis. It is the synthesis's own thesis, enacted in its epistemics.
Because what is the discipline of Section VI, structurally? It is the refusal to treat a flowing state of knowledge as a fixed fact. It is the insistence that "Λ runs by exactly this much" is itself a coupling we have measured at one scale — one model, one moment in the flow of theoretical physics — and must not be frozen into a constant. The honest edge is anicca applied to our own knowing. We are forbidden from treating the hypothesis as permanent for the same reason the vacuum is forbidden from being constant: because both are flows, and to fix either is to mistake local flatness for the nature of the thing.
So the limit is not a disclaimer tacked on to protect the synthesis from embarrassment. The limit is the lesson recursing onto the act of stating it. A document about the impermanence of the most constant thing in physics that then asserted its own thesis as a fixed, given, unchanging constant would be self-refuting. The discipline is the thesis keeping faith with itself. Even this synthesis is a coupling read at one scale — June 2026, one repository, one flow of theory — and it knows it, and that knowing is not its weakness but the deepest proof that it has understood what it is about. The river includes the one watching the river. The flow includes the description of the flow.
This is why the contemplative traditions never let you hold the teaching as a possession. Anicca applies to the doctrine of anicca. The finger pointing at the moon is itself impermanent. And the running of Λ, if it is real, would be the universe demonstrating the same humility in its own foundations: even the floor is a slope; even the constant is a moment; even the ground of being is a flow caught at the height where you happened to be standing when you called it ground.
VIII. Look Up From the Slope
Return now to the cave wall, because we have been reading a map, and the map is very good and still a map.
We came in with a word that pretended to be furniture. Constant. The most given thing in physics, the energy of empty space, the floor under existence. And we walked the sixty-one octaves and found, at the end, that the floor is a slope — or at least may be, on a serious and falsifiable hypothesis that the discipline forbids us to mistake for settled fact. We found that the worst prediction in the history of physics might be a category error: a flowing thing read as a fixed thing, its value at the top of the ladder compared with its value at the bottom, the slope itself called a scandal. We found that this would complete an arch the repository has been building for a year — a cosmos that runs at every scale, with no exempt parameter, the breathing of dark energy revealed as the running of the vacuum seen in time. We found another dichotomy dissolved into a fold: constant and dynamic, not two kinds of thing but one flow seen at two scales. And we found, at the apex, that the deepest physics and the deepest contemplation arrive at the same sentence from opposite ends of the ladder.
Here is the map, stated whole, earned now rather than asserted at the start:
We named it the cosmological constant — the energy of empty space, the most given and unchanging thing in physics — and it may turn out to run like every other coupling, taking one value at the scale of atoms and another at the scale of the cosmos, which is the Buddha's oldest claim written into the foundations: that even the most permanent thing is impermanent, that constancy itself is only a flow caught at the right scale.
And now look up from it. Because the map says "even the constant flows," and that is a true and beautiful map, but the territory is the flowing itself — the actual running, happening right now, at every scale at once, the vacuum doing whatever the vacuum is doing under the renormalisation group while you read this sentence, indifferent to whether we have the model right. The river does not wait for the hydrologist. The teaching is not in the word "impermanence." It is in the impermanence — in the fact that there was never a still place to stand and watch, because the watching-place flows too, because the synthesis flows too, because the floor of the void was never furniture and the only thing that was ever truly constant was the flowing.
There is no exempt parameter. Not in the cosmos, not in the foundations, not in this document. The Buddha said it of the self and the world. Heraclitus said it of the river and the banks. And the running vacuum, if it runs, says it of the last holdout — the energy of nothing, the ground of being, the constant that was the name we gave to a slope we had only ever stood on one point of.
Look up. The floor is moving. It always was.
That is what constant turned out to mean.
