Every contemplative tradition that takes time seriously has noticed something like this. The dark night of the soul. The silent decade. The fallow year. The long stretch in any sustained inquiry where nothing seems to be happening — and then, suddenly, the whole pattern reorganizes. The Boring Billion is that experience writ across a planet. The engram doesn't only proceed by inscription. It also proceeds by stillness. The pause is part of the writing.

Celestial engram generalizes the principle to every body in every solar system. Every orbit is a memory. Every spin is a register. Every resonance is a stored decision. The solar system is an archive of its own dynamic history, and reading the archive is what celestial mechanics, planetary science, and astrochronology actually do.

Mercury's 3:2 spin-orbit resonance is an engram of its orbital eccentricity history. Venus's retrograde rotation is an engram of some catastrophe — possibly an early impact, possibly a thick-atmosphere thermal-tide capture — whose details we cannot fully read but whose existence is undeniable. The Sun's 11-year magnetic cycle is the master clock of the solar system, an engram of the rotational shear within its plasma. Saturn's rings are engrams of moon destructions. time — Becoming

Becoming.

The essence-word for time in this lexicon is becoming. Not "duration." Not "measurement." Not "the fourth dimension." Time as becoming — as the active, ongoing, irreversible production of what wasn't yet.

This applies to everything. Your body is a standing wave. The atoms in your body are mostly not the atoms that were there seven years ago — and yet you persist. Persistence is not material continuity. Persistence is pattern continuity through material flow. Resonance existence is the recognition that this is true at every scale. The river is not the water. The flame is not the gas. The Moon is not the rocks. The relationship is what persists.

Any system where the rate of approach is proportional to the remaining distance.
Compound interest. Radioactive decay (in reverse). Capacitor discharge. Population approaching carrying capacity. Skill mastery curves. Most healing trajectories.
Spiritual practice as conventionally described — "the closer you get, the slower the approach, and the gap is the practice."
Any process where the quantity that drives the change is consumed by the change.

The asymptotic spiral is a profoundly common shape in nature, in physics, and in human development. The earth moon lock is its purest cosmic expression — a system that has been approaching its asymptote for 4.5 billion years and is still less than 10% of the way there in terms of remaining angular momentum to redistribute.

Norse

In Norse cosmology, Sól and Máni — Sun and Moon — are siblings driven across the sky in chariots, pursued by the wolves Sköll and Hati. At Ragnarök, the wolves catch their prey. Time itself is what is being eaten — the regular procession of celestial bodies, the predictability of day and month. The Norse intuited that the celestial mechanics are the medium of time, and the destruction of the celestial order is the destruction of time. The Kali Yuga is shorter than the Dvapara Yuga, which is shorter than the Treta, which is shorter than the Krita — the cycles compress as the cosmic clock winds down. Their dance is the cosmic process. Egyptian

Ra crossing the sky in his solar barque. Khonsu, the lunar god, his name meaning "traveler." The Egyptians built one of the most elaborate astronomical priesthoods in history specifically to track the relationship between solar and lunar timing. Their calendar was a continuous engineering problem because solar years and lunar months don't divide evenly. They knew, in some functional sense, that the earth moon lock is a system whose two timescales are not in simple resonance — and that the misalignment is itself the source of much of the rhythm of life.
