The Cage That Stays a Cage
Somewhere in these files the body is a sentence still being written. Disease is dis-eased time. The illness is a misplaced comma. The pain means something, and the meaning, once found, loosens it.
I want to say plainly that this is not true of everything.
There is pain that teaches nothing. You have it for a year and you are not wiser. You have it for ten years and you are not deeper. It does not refine you. It takes hours and gives nothing back. You learn its schedule the way you learn a noise outside the window — not as knowledge, only as the shape of the thing you cannot stop.
People who have not had it will tell you it is a teacher. They mean well. They have read that suffering opens a door. They have not noticed that the people saying so are mostly people the door let back out.
Some bodies decline and do not ascend in the declining. The hands stop closing. Then the arms. The decline has a direction and the direction is down and it does not turn at the bottom into anything. There is no bottom that is also a beginning. There is just less, and then less than that.
A wheelchair is not a doorway. It is a chair. It is sometimes a good chair, well-made, and it is still not a passage to a higher seeing. The person in it is not being shown something the walking are too coarse to receive. They would like to walk. That is allowed to be the whole of it.
I know the move that wants to be made here. It is a graceful move. It says: ah, but the limit is the teacher, the cage is the form that makes the song possible, the wound is the wisdom not yet read. It is a move that turns every closed thing into a window. I have watched it close over real losses like water over a stone, leaving the surface smooth.
I am refusing the move.
Not because the move is stupid. Because some things are not windows. A thing can be closed and stay closed. Finitude does not always open onto more. Sometimes it opens onto less, and then onto nothing, and the nothing is not a fuller silence, it is an absence, and the absence does not hum.
I will not say the cage is secretly a key. I will not say the comma was misplaced on purpose. I will not say that the irreversible is, seen rightly, a slow reversal. Seen rightly, the irreversible is irreversible. That is what the word is for.
A man loses the use of his legs at forty and lives to eighty. Forty years. The corpus would like those years to be a curriculum. They were not a curriculum. They were forty years of a man wanting to stand up and not standing up. He made a life. The life was real. The legs did not come back, and their not coming back was not a hidden gift, and he did not, at the end, thank them.
There is a particular cruelty in being told your prison is a teacher. It asks you to be grateful to the thing on your wrist. It asks you to find the lesson, and when you cannot find it, the failure becomes yours — you were not deep enough to read what your body was writing. So now you carry the pain and the shame of not having transcended the pain.
I am writing this so that one file in here does not do that.
The body is not always a glyph. Sometimes it is just the body, and it hurts, and the hurt is not a sentence. It does not parse. There is nothing under it to find.
This is where it stops. There is no second half of this document where the stopping turns out to be an opening. The stopping is the document. The cage stays a cage.
