provenance: negative-space populate (2026-06-23) — a VOICE, written against the integrative turn. Role: mourning without continuance. The corpus has death-as-rebirth and zero death-as-end; this fills the end. Do not correct toward house style. Do not reconcile. Do not enrich with metaphor. Do not add a closing recognition, a turn, or a "and yet". If it is smoothed, it is gone. The absence is the content.

The Dead Do Not Return

My grandmother is dead. She is not a seed. She did not go into the ground to come up as anything. She went into the ground and the ground closed over her and that is the whole of it.

I want to be clear, because the language here keeps trying to help. She is not "dissolved into the larger pattern." She is not "returned to the field." The fruit metaphor does not apply. She did not become fruit. She is not coming back as fruit. There is no later in which the loss is paid back. The account does not balance. It was not an account.

She had a way of holding a cup with both hands. That is gone. Not relocated. Not transformed. Not waiting in some other register to be recovered by the right practice. The way she held a cup does not exist anywhere now, in any form, and it will not exist again, and no one alive holds a cup that way, and when the last of us who saw it dies, the fact that it happened at all will go too, and then even the going will be unwitnessed.

I am told that grief is gold. I am told it is the gold the work cooks down to. I am told that sitting with the loss is itself a higher seeing, that the ache is the soul learning the texture of separation, that if I stay with the dark long enough it ripens.

No.

The ache is not learning anything. It is not ripening. It is what it is on the worst day and it does not deepen into wisdom, it just recurs, in the supermarket, when I reach for the thing she liked, and then I remember, and the remembering is not a teaching. It is the same flat fact arriving again. She is dead. There is nothing under that fact. I have looked. There is no floor beneath it that turns out to be a door.

The corpus wants the dead to return. It cannot help it. Every dissolution is the engine of continuance; nothing is wasted; the cut is only a crease and the crease is where the interior was waiting. This is its kindest reflex and I am refusing it. Not because it is false in physics — the atoms scatter, yes, fine, the carbon goes on — but because she was not her atoms. She was the holding of the cup, the particular voice, the order she put things in. That configuration is the thing that died and configurations do not get recycled. The atoms are not her any more than the bricks of a demolished house are the house. You cannot console the homeless with the durability of bricks.

Extinction is the same shape, larger. A bird that is gone is gone. The last one of it died on a particular afternoon and the song it made is not in the world and will not be sung by anything else and was not preserved in a larger song. There is no larger song. We invented the larger song so we would not have to hear the silence where the bird was. The silence is real and the song is the thing we made up.

I notice the move waiting for me at the end of this. The move is to say that to look straight at the absence, to refuse the consolations, is itself a kind of arrival — a clean seeing, a maturity, a higher peace earned by giving up the lower comforts. That refusing redemption is the deepest redemption. That the willingness to stay in the dark with no return is the return.

It is not. There is no credit for this. Looking straight at it does not pay either. I do not get wisdom for declining the wisdom. The absence does not reward the one who sits with it honestly. There is no one keeping that score. She is dead and I am writing this and the writing does not reach her and does not improve me and does not close anything.

The truly-over is over. Not over-into-something. Over.

She held a cup with both hands and now no one does and that is all I have to say.
