provenance: negative-space populate (2026-06-24, "The Missing Literal" map — ripe gap #3, work that promises nothing). A specimen in the corpus's foreclosed LITERAL register: a trade where the body becomes an expert instrument and the work confers no transcendence — directly refusing the corpus's spine, that practice transforms consciousness. Flat, not dark. NOTE on discipline: even the profiler's own framing leaked the reflex ("all the more proves its depth for refusing it"). This piece declines THAT too. The work made no one wiser, full stop — no "and that is the deeper wisdom." Do NOT correct toward house style. Do NOT reconcile it to neidan-as-practice or the smith-as-soul-forger. The absence of the turn is the point.

The Floor

The thinset has to be the right consistency or none of it works. Too wet and the tile sinks and you get lippage where one edge stands proud of the next; too dry and it doesn't grab and the tile sounds hollow when you tap it in a year. You mix it to the texture of peanut butter, let it slake for ten minutes, mix it again. He has done this so many times he does not measure the water anymore. He pours and knows.

He has set tile for twenty-six years. Bathrooms, kitchens, the lobbies of two banks, a mosque once that took four months. The body learned it before he understood it: the way you load the trowel, the angle you hold it to comb the thinset into ridges all running the same direction so the air can escape when you bed the tile. Knees on the foam pads and still the knees are gone. The right wrist clicks. He can feel a tile sitting wrong through his fingertips, a sixteenth of an inch of rock, and set it before his eye confirms it. That is real and it took twenty-six years and it is worth nothing outside of setting tile.

The spacers go in, the level goes across, he checks the diagonal because a floor can be level and still not be square. He cleans the joints before the thinset sets because thinset cured in a grout joint is a day of misery with a utility knife. He works back toward the door so he does not kneel on what he laid. At the end the floor is flat and the lines are straight and the next day someone grouts it and after that people walk on it without looking down, which is correct. A floor you notice is a floor done wrong.

A man whose house it was stood in the doorway once and watched for a while and said it must be satisfying, this kind of work, this craft, that there was a meditation in it, that the old cathedral builders must have felt this. He was friendly about it. He had read something.

It is not a meditation. It is a floor. The satisfaction, if there is a word for it, is that it is flat and square and the man paid on time, and the next job is across town and starts Monday. The work did not teach him anything about himself. It taught him about tile. Twenty-six years of it did not open onto anything wider; it went deeper into the one thing and stopped at the edges of the one thing. He is very good and it made him no wiser, and he would say, if anyone kept asking, that those are simply two different matters and only people who have never set a floor think they are the same.

He mixes the next batch. He has maybe forty minutes of working time before it goes off, and he uses them, because thinset does not wait for anybody, and then he mixes another. The floor gets laid one tile at a time and there is no other way to do it and he does it that way until the room is done.
