A specimen in the corpus's foreclosed LITERAL register, distinct from "The Lift Station": that piece centered a MAN; this one centers the MADE OBJECT itself — the operative/empirical/made (Face C), no protagonist. The underside of every architectural metaphor the corpus loves (infrastructure-of-seeing, architecture-of-mind, holarchy, the threshold). Flat description of a designed working thing, declining the "underground cathedral / sacred infrastructure / the city is a body" reflex once and then withholding it. Do NOT add the body-metaphor. Do NOT reconcile it to "infrastructure as insight." The absence of the turn is the point.

The Interceptor

It runs on grade. That is the first fact and most of the rest follows from it. Sewage does not get pumped if it can be helped, because pumping costs money and breaks down; it is made to fall. So the whole network is cut into the ground at a slope, a quarter inch to the foot for the small lines, less for the big ones, every pipe in the city tilted just enough that water moves and solids do not settle out and rot in place. A city's sanitary system is, before anything else, a very large and very precise arrangement of downhill.

The house laterals feed the street mains. The street mains feed the trunk lines. The trunk lines feed the interceptor, which is the largest pipe, often big enough to drive a truck through, laid along the lowest line of the land — the old creek bed, usually, because water found the low ground long before engineers did and the engineers followed it. The interceptor carries everything to the headworks of the treatment plant, and from the moment it leaves the house to the moment it reaches the plant, if the grade is right, nothing has lifted it. It fell the whole way.

At the headworks it is screened. Bar screens, steel rakes set close together, catch the rags and the wipes and the things that should not have been flushed and were. Then the grit chamber, where the flow is slowed just enough that sand and coffee grounds and eggshell drop to the bottom to be hauled out, because grit is abrasive and would wear the pumps and the pipes downstream. Then primary clarifiers, big quiet tanks where the heavy solids settle and skimmers pull the grease off the top. Then the aeration basins, where air is blown through the water and bacteria — kept alive on purpose, fed, managed, a cultivated population doing the actual work — eat the dissolved waste. Then secondary clarifiers, where those bacteria settle out in turn and most are pumped back to the basins to keep the population up. Then disinfection, then the outfall, where what leaves is clean enough to put into the river the next town drinks from downstream, which is the entire reason the plant exists and is built to the standard it is built to.

None of this is hidden in any meaningful sense. It is on a plat. It is permitted, inspected, and metered. There are men who come out at night when an alarm trips, and there are operators who watch dissolved-oxygen numbers on a screen and adjust the blowers, and there is a budget line in the city that pays for all of it, voted on, complained about, deferred when the deferring is politically easier than the raising of the rate.

You could call it the body of the city, its hidden circulation, the labor beneath the labor that holds the visible world up. People do say things like that, in dedication speeches, when a plant is rebuilt. It is not that. It is a designed system for moving water downhill, screening it, settling it, feeding it to bacteria, and putting it back in the river below the intake of the next town. Every part of it is there for a reason that can be stated in a sentence and the sentence is never about meaning. It is about grade, abrasion, dissolved oxygen, and the river downstream.

It works in the night the same as the day, at no particular hour, with no one thinking about it, which is the condition under which it is judged to be working. The measure of the system is that the city above it does not have to know it is there. It carries the day's flow, and then the next day's, on the same quarter inch to the foot, downhill, to the river, and the river takes it.
