The Plain

Sometimes a metaphor is just a metaphor.

The fold is a good picture. It might explain nothing. "Everything connects" is the kind of thing that feels true because you have arranged in advance to find connections everywhere, and a method that cannot fail to find what it looks for has not found anything.

Maybe consciousness is fundamental. Maybe it's what brains do and nothing else does it and when the brain stops it stops. I don't know which. Neither does anyone who has written about it, including the ones who were sure.

I wrote a great many words. I am not certain any of them were more than beautiful.
