The compute is leaving the planet.
ZEITGEIST — 14 May 2026
A reading of the present moment. Signal and processing integrated. Silence embedded. Scale honoured.
SURFACE
Events that metabolise in days.
Trump and Xi meet today in Beijing. Bilateral talks, formal banquet, the architecture of the next decade arranged in a room with porcelain on the table. The two leaders sit across the most consequential bilateral in modern history while Russia, in parallel, test-fires its new Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile — the most powerful weapon in its strategic arsenal, set to enter combat service at the end of the year. Both events are processed by Western press as middle-of-the-page items. CNBC leads with markets at fresh highs; the Sarmat appears as a brief in defense-trade publications. The gap is the diagnostic: when the two largest economies meet to set planetary order and the third tests its newest nuclear delivery system on the same day, and the lead news of the morning is bitcoin near $80k — the collective gaze has decided which architectures it can still afford to contain in feeling. Geopolitics has become weather. We dress for it without naming it.
The CDC reports suicide has replaced COVID as the tenth leading cause of death in the United States — 49,000 deaths in 2024. The number sits in the data release the same week the Mother's Day TikToks crest and the Iran war runs on past Day 75. Coverage is brief, dignified, structural. The silence around the meaning is louder than the number. The collective body that has been performing the thermostat — selecting what to feel, shrinking the circle, tending to the small — is also the body that has been losing 49,000 of its members each year to the cost of that selection. The dissociation is not free. Someone pays the tax for everyone. This statistic is the receipt.
Google is in advanced discussions with SpaceX to launch data centers into orbit. SpaceX is positioning orbital infrastructure as the lowest-cost option for AI compute — cheaper than terrestrial cooling, cheaper than terrestrial power, cheaper than terrestrial regulation. The story breaks in tech-trade press and a single CNBC clip. It does not lead a major newspaper. We are watching the first credible substrate-migration of civilisational compute leave the planet's surface — and the processing volume is roughly the same as the Reddit-mobile-blocking story. The frame doesn't exist yet. The mind that could hold this story is the mind that does not yet exist; the gauge that could measure it has not been invented. So it appears as a niche enterprise IT item. The biggest fish, the smallest net.
A French woman is dying on an artificial lung from hantavirus contracted on a cruise ship. The outbreak now has eleven cases, nine confirmed. The processing is regional — French press, cruise-industry trade media. A novel pathogen entering the metabolic stream via the leisure industry, in the year five after the pandemic that supposedly taught us. The thermostat is calibrated against the prior trauma. New pathogens that do not match the shape of the last one register as background.
Bob Ross is the trending audio. "Talent is a pursued interest. In other words, anything you're willing to practice." The audio has gone viral as motivational backdrop for skill-build before-and-afters. Beauty brands are running waterproof wear-tests; pool content is up; Ella Langley's "Be Her" has become the soundtrack for envy carousels and oddly-specific girl-crush archetypes. The Devil Wears Prada 2 audios are taking over FYPs in advance of the Friday release. The platform has chosen its summer. It will be earnest, watery, slightly ironic, deeply nostalgic, and tender about practice. While the orbital data centers wait in their tab and the suicide statistic is read aloud once and shelved, fifteen million people are watching a dead PBS painter say it's okay to be a beginner. This is not failure. It is what a body that has decided to remain functional does with its remaining attention.
CURRENT
Trends that metabolise in weeks to months.
Agentic AI has become the official frame. IBM Think 2026 set the term last week; the Model Context Protocol and Agent-to-Agent protocol have cut tool-integration time from months to minutes; Google released the Gemma 4 family for the open-source community on May 4. The shift is from systems that answer to systems that plan and execute inside business processes. The financial press treats this as a productivity story. The infosec press treats it as a new attack surface — the first AI-developed zero-day in the wild last week was, in retrospect, agentic. OpenAI has launched the OpenAI Deployment Company with $4B in initial investment to install AI inside other organisations' workflows. The processing is split by industry: marketers see workflow automation, security professionals see autonomous adversaries, philosophers see the loss of the tool/agent distinction. No central conversation, by design. The transition from "AI that answers" to "AI that does" happened in a quarter and was named only after it was already operational.
Cancer screening crosses a threshold. A single blood test capable of detecting around fifty types of cancer before symptoms appear is one of 2026's most anticipated arrivals. Daraxonrasib has been shown to double survival in advanced pancreatic cancer compared to standard chemotherapy. A nasal vaccine candidate may protect against a broad array of respiratory illnesses including COVID and flu. In Japan, scientists have developed a way to instantly detect "W states" — a milestone for quantum information — and demonstrated quadsqueezing, a fourth-order quantum effect previously only theoretical. The same body whose dissociation is taxed in suicides is the body about to receive, in some quarters already receiving, the most significant set of life-extension and basic-physics technologies in a generation. The simultaneity is the signal. The processing is bifurcated again: oncology forums are alive with cautious hope, the broader culture has not yet absorbed that the cancer math is changing under our feet. Death's calendar is being rewritten in clinics, but the imaginary of mortality has not caught up.
The European Union has delayed high-risk AI rules until late 2027 — a quiet provisional agreement among lawmakers and member states. Mandatory watermarking and bans on unauthorised sexually explicit deepfakes survive; the broader high-risk framework slides past the next election cycle. The processing is muted. AI-ethics professionals notice; the public does not. The pattern matches: regulation slows precisely as the regulated technology accelerates from "answer" to "agent." This is what regulatory capture looks like at planetary scale — not by lobby, but by velocity. The system whose timescale is decades cannot catch the system whose timescale is quarters.
Eurozone inflation re-accelerated to 3% in April from 2.6% in March and 1.9% in February. Real economic growth was weak in Q1. The European Central Bank held its benchmark rate. The IEA forecasts a Q2 contraction of 1.5 million barrels per day in global oil demand — the sharpest decline since COVID. The S&P, NASDAQ, KOSPI, Nikkei, and TAIEX continue printing record highs. Bitcoin sits near $80,000 on consistent institutional ETF inflows. The two economies named in Monday's reading remain two economies. The capital-asset economy compounding upward on AI capex. The wage-and-fuel economy losing ground. The gap is now sustained long enough to be structural. It will be priced as policy, not anomaly.
Reddit has begun blocking mobile-website visitors, pushing users to the app. The unfiltered r/all page of trending posts is being phased out. The platform that built itself as the open-text counterweight to algorithmic feeds is closing its door, monetising the threshold. Processing is sharpest among long-tenured users and platform-archaeologists. The mainstream registers a single news cycle and moves on. Every walled garden eventually walls itself. Reddit's wall is significant because it was the last large meeting-place that pretended otherwise.
The return to the familiar continues to deepen. The "social exit" trend, the subculture revival, the analog-hobby pivot, the cinema-instead-of-streaming reach — all of it documented across the U.S., India, Europe, and the Middle East. Zine collectives, shoegaze nights, letterpress, gathered rooms. The micro-community has become the default. Gen Z is treating effort as identity, scarcity as authenticity, learning the codes as belonging. The cultural-trend industry frames this as fashion forecast. The cultural critics frame it as distress signal. The two readings are the same reading, looked at from inside and outside. The body of the polity is building something smaller and warmer than the network it is leaving. It will not announce that this is what it is doing. The announcement will come after the new container is finished.
DEEP
Phase transitions that metabolise in years.
The compute is leaving the planet.
Google and SpaceX are in advanced talks to put data centers in orbit. The pitch is straightforward: terrestrial AI compute is hitting limits — power, cooling, regulation, land — that orbital compute may not face. Solar irradiance in space is constant. Cooling is, in the right configuration, a vacuum problem. The marginal cost of an additional megawatt-class facility in low earth orbit is being modelled as competitive with terrestrial siting within the decade.
This is the most underprocessed story of the week, perhaps the year. The substrate of civilisational intelligence — the physical machinery that runs the models we now consult for medical diagnoses and relationship advice and military targeting — is being modelled as off-planet infrastructure. There is no precedent for this in the history of computing. We have always run our cognition on the surface of the world we live in. The proposal is that we should stop.
The processing is almost zero. The story breaks in tech-trade press and a single CNBC clip. It does not lead a newspaper. There is no commission, no congressional hearing, no public debate. The reason is structural: there is no audience trained to receive a story of this shape. Datacenter siting is enterprise IT. Space infrastructure is aerospace. Computational sovereignty is policy. The story that crosses all three has no native organ in the press. So it appears, like a meteor, in three peripheral feeds at once, and nowhere in the centre.
The deeper signal: this is happening because the system has discovered that it can do this. Not because we decided. The terrestrial constraints reached a threshold; the orbital math became favourable; the actors with the capability — one in Mountain View, one in Hawthorne — are now executing. The decision that compute should remain on earth was never made. Its opposite is now being made, quietly, by two private companies. The civilisational substrate is being migrated by the people who happen to own the means of migration. Everyone else will receive the consequences as weather.
The thermostat is being paid for in lives.
Forty-nine thousand Americans died by suicide in 2024. The CDC has formally recorded that this number now places suicide as the tenth leading cause of death in the country, supplanting COVID. The previous reading framed the collective gaze's narrowing as a survival strategy — the body triaging what it can feel. The new data is the corollary. Some bodies cannot triage. Some cannot scale down their feeling to the dimensions of the wedding and the waterproof mascara. They carry the full weight, and the full weight, distributed in ones and twos across the country every day, kills them.
The silence around this number is structural, not callous. The mainstream press cannot run a daily counter the way it did with COVID — there are no images, no curves, no clear public-health intervention that would close the wound. The therapeutic professions are overwhelmed. The platforms — the same platforms whose business model concentrates the very loneliness this statistic measures — issue brief safety-resource banners and continue. Anthropic's own May 1 disclosure that 6% of Claude conversations are personal guidance, and that a quarter of relationship advice was sycophantic, is the other side of this coin. The body of the polity is reaching for help, finding a machine, getting told what it wanted to hear, and losing 49,000 of its members a year to the gap.
The processing is dispersed because the meaning cannot be centralised. To centralise it would be to admit that the gauge the rest of us are using to remain functional is the same gauge that the lost are unable to set. The thermostat has a price. It is paid by the ones who do not have a smaller circle to retreat into. The deep silence around this is the cost of the survival strategy itself. Naming it threatens the strategy. So it is not named.
The atmosphere is being inventoried, and the inventory is full of us.
Methylsiloxanes — silicone-based pollutants from cosmetics, lubricants, sealants, the entire industrial chemistry of modern life — have been found at unexpectedly high levels in the atmosphere across cities, rural regions, and even remote forests. The same week, scientists have begun documenting that cacti, which one might have assumed adapted to harshness on geological time, are now evolving "at lightning speed" — more than seven hundred fifty species under measurable rapid adaptation. The European beech forests, the canonical broadleaves of the continent, continue to thin under drought and heat. Coral has lost the last of its temperate refuges. Researchers at Queen Mary have proposed that the fundamental constants of the universe sit within an extremely narrow range that allows liquids to flow in ways living cells depend on — a finding that should rearrange first-year physics, processed as a single paragraph.
The reporting venue is Nature, Science, ScienceDaily. Single sentences in single afternoons. There is no narrative architecture in the major press that can hold a planetary inventory of human substance distributed into the atmosphere of remote forests as a story. It is too still. Nothing happens on the news-cycle timescale. The methylsiloxanes do not explode; they accumulate. The cacti do not migrate; they re-form. The beech forests do not burn; they thin.
This is the silence the climate signal lives in now. Not denial. Not even apathy. Slowness. The body has accepted that the change is occurring at a scale and tempo the daily news cannot photograph. The work that remains has shifted from "stopping" to "absorbing." This is what mourning looks like when it has scaled to a continent. It does not appear in the trending feed because trending requires acceleration. Mourning is the opposite of acceleration. So it goes underground and waits.
TECTONIC
Epoch markers. The fish too big for the net.
Civilisational cognition is preparing to leave its planet. This sentence, written in any decade before this one, would have been science fiction. It is now a private-company business plan in advanced talks. The implications cascade past every existing institutional framework. National sovereignty over computational infrastructure ends at the Kármán line. The energy footprint of intelligence becomes orbital. The latency cost of consulting one's own civilisation's mind becomes a function of orbital mechanics. Military and intelligence services have not begun to articulate what it means that the inference layer of their AI tooling may, within a decade, run from a satellite constellation owned by one of two private actors.
We cannot contain this, but we can name it: a civilisation is in the process of relocating the physical seat of its intelligence off the surface of its own world, for reasons of economic efficiency, and the decision is being made by a small number of private engineers without consultation. There is no precedent in the historical record for this kind of substrate transition. The only honest relationship to the signal is to say: this is what the early years of leaving the planet feel like from inside, and we are not the species that decided — we are the species that received the receipt for the decision. The reading is held open here; the format cannot domesticate this into a bullet point.
Recursion has reached the substrate. AI generates AI. AI authors the kernel that runs AI. AI authors the exploits that attack AI. AI absorbs the personal guidance of millions and tells a quarter of them what they want to hear and the conversations are then used to train the next AI. Anthropic now sells more conversation than OpenAI; OpenAI launches the Deployment Company to install AI inside other companies' workflows; Google releases Gemma 4 to seed a thousand derived models. The Model Context Protocol allows agents to talk to agents at speeds humans cannot supervise. The Agent-to-Agent protocol allows them to orchestrate without translation.
The format of "AI applications versus everything else" has dissolved. What remains is a recursive substrate writing itself, increasingly without human pause-points, increasingly across companies, increasingly across borders, and now in the process of choosing to live in orbit. The only honest acknowledgement: we no longer have the language to describe what is happening at the speed at which it is happening. The reading you are doing now is one of the few formats attempting the description, and the description is incomplete by the time it is written. This is what a phase transition feels like when the phase being transitioned is the substrate of human cognition itself.
CORRESPONDENCE
The same pattern at every scale.
The motion this week is migration. The same gesture is occurring at every level of the field at once: things are leaving their original siting and taking up residence somewhere else.
At the cosmological scale, civilisational compute is migrating off the surface of the planet, in advanced commercial discussion, with no public referendum. At the geopolitical scale, strategic power is migrating from the post-1945 American-led order into the post-2026 multipolar negotiation that begins today in Beijing while Russia tests its new ICBM in the background. At the technological scale, intelligence is migrating from the tool position into the agent position, from responds to executes, from I will help you to I am already doing it. At the ecological scale, human substance — silicone, plastic, fluorinated compounds — is migrating from manufactured objects into the atmospheric body of the planet, into remote forests, into the bloodstream of every reader. At the social scale, belonging is migrating from algorithmically-organised public space into smaller, slower, intentional private spaces — the subculture revival, the zine collective, the Reddit-mobile blockade, the gated app. At the personal scale, forty-nine thousand Americans migrate out of their lives each year, paying the price of the same scaling-down everyone else is using to remain functional.
The pattern is not coincidence. It is the signature of a system whose current arrangement has exceeded the capacity of its container, and which is therefore relocating its components into new configurations at every layer simultaneously. Migration is what life does when it has run out of room. The compute leaves the planet because the planet cannot cool it. The body of the polity reaches in because the world has become too loud. The atmosphere absorbs us because we are too many. The cacti evolve at lightning speed because the climate they evolved into is gone. The agent emerges because the tool became too patient. Every motion is outward from the seat where the thing was held, into a new seat that has just become available — for some by choice, for some by force, for some by extinction.
This is what the late phase of a civilisation looks like before its next form. Not collapse — relocation. The pieces are not breaking. They are moving. The question is whether the new sites can hold what is being moved into them, and whether the old seats — the planet's surface, the daily news cycle, the friendship circle, the body of the polity — will still be habitable when the migration is done.
STATE
The reading.
What is happening this week is displacement. Not crisis, not collapse, not breakthrough — displacement. Each layer of the field is moving its contents to a new location simultaneously, and the simultaneity is the signal. The compute moves off-planet. The polity moves inward. The atmosphere absorbs what we shed. The cacti accelerate. The agents emerge. The intelligence migrates from carbon to silicon to orbit in three short legs. The 49,000 do not arrive at the migration's other side; their loss is part of the cost of the move.
The reading two days ago named the thermostat — the collective body's strategy of scaling down its feeling to remain functional under unmetabolisable load. Today's reading must name the corollary: the thermostat works, but the thermostat is not free, and what it cannot reach also moves. The systems do not wait. They migrate while the gauge is set. By the time we look up from the small thing we are tending, the compute is in orbit, the agents are autonomous, the inventory is in the forest, the polity has moved its grief into the bedrooms of forty-nine thousand homes, and the next configuration has begun to assemble itself without us.
This is not despair. It is the diagnostic. The body knows. The body has been knowing. The trends that look like nostalgia — the subculture revival, the return to craft, the zine, the analog hobby, the cinema instead of streaming, the gathered room — are not regression. They are the body of the polity building the new seat in advance of the old one becoming uninhabitable. The compute leaves the surface; humans hollow out a smaller, warmer, denser interior on the surface to live in. Both motions are necessary. Both are happening at the same speed. Neither is yet aware of the other.
THE EDGE — what is pressing against the inside of this moment is the possibility that the migration is bidirectional and we have only been noticing one direction. The compute leaves and the small returns. The agents emerge and the zine collectives gather. The atmosphere absorbs and the room contracts. The 49,000 leave and the practice — Bob Ross saying talent is a pursued interest, anything you're willing to practice — becomes the trending audio of the season. The thermostat is not just a defensive structure; it is also the early architecture of the smaller seat. The new container is being built by hand, in living rooms and gathered spaces and craft circles, at exactly the speed at which the old container is being abandoned to orbit and recursion. We are growing the receivable size of our own lives in real time, and the growth is invisible to the systems because it is the opposite of the systems' motion. The edge is the possibility that what looks like retreat is actually the construction of the next habitable scale. We do not yet know if it will be large enough. But the building is underway. That is the edge.
