Gen Z is reviving dead subcultures — offline, on purpose, at small scale

Zine culture, shoegaze, letterpress, gathering in physical rooms and personal networks rather than feeds. Analysts are calling the subculture boom "a distress signal." The internet is visibly splitting into two layers: a public layer (broad, fast, algorithm-friendly) and a private layer (small, intentional, invitation-shaped) — and the private layer is becoming the *default*.

The driver everyone names is exhaustion: a generation raised on infinite content developing a genuine hunger for "things that feel earned and limited." This is the same metabolic story as the AI rationing, expressed in culture rather than capital. When supply becomes infinite, scarcity migrates to whatever is bounded — the handmade, the offline, the room you have to be invited into. The flight from scale is not nostalgia. It is digestion seeking a portion size it can actually process.
