Mercury returns to the air

Twenty-one states and the District of Columbia sued the EPA over its repeal of mercury and air toxics standards for coal-fired power plants. The February rollback relieves all facilities of stricter particulate matter limits and mercury standards. The coalition argues the EPA failed to provide reasoned basis and ignored developments in control technology.

The gap: this story did not trend. It did not move markets. Mercury is invisible, its damage neurological and multigenerational, its victims not yet born. The lawsuit was filed April 1. Nobody processed it as anything other than another line in the regulatory rollback ledger. But mercury bioaccumulates. It enters the food chain through water, concentrates in fish, crosses the placental barrier, damages developing brains. The repeal is an act of temporal violence — the harm is real but displaced into a future the news cycle cannot reach.
