Peru's ninth president in a decade

Thirty-five candidates. Rampant corruption. Rising crime. The country votes for its ninth president in less than ten years — not because democracy is working, but because it keeps producing leaders that democracy then ejects.

The gap: the rapid presidential turnover is processed as instability. It is also the immune system functioning. Peru cannot hold a leader because the electorate keeps recognising infection. The question is whether recognition without systemic reform constitutes healing or merely a chronic autoimmune response.
