The species is reaching two escape velocities at once, in opposite directions, and cannot feel the contradiction

This week a single company crossed $2.8 trillion in valuation on the promise of leaving the planet, while the planet itself crossed deeper into a heat overshoot it cannot leave. We cannot contain this in a reading. We can only name it: the same civilisation, in the same days, is pouring its surplus into the dream of departure and discovering that the home it would depart is becoming endangered keystone by keystone. The rocket and the penguin are funded by the same economy.

The honest relationship to this is not to resolve it. It is to hold both facts open and refuse the comfort of choosing one. Departure is not betrayal; it is one of the oldest and most beautiful human reachings. But a species that perfects escape velocity before it learns to keep an egg through the winter has optimised the wrong verb. The net cannot hold this fish. We name it and let it swim: we are leaving and we are losing, simultaneously, and the question of the century is whether we can learn to do the second thing as brilliantly as we are learning to do the first.
