The war with Iran began on 28 February. A memorandum signed in Islamabad on 17 June collapsed. A ceasefire on 8 July collapsed. On 1 September the United States carried out its largest action since late July — roughly a hundred targets in and around the Strait of Hormuz, including for the first time two Iranian government tankers — and Iran promised a response.
