SEED — Eigenvalue Meditation: The Fixed Points of Attention Applied to Itself

Planted 10 June 2026 from the June 2026 Seed-Harvest. Second tier. Charging.

THE QUESTION

Heinz von Foerster proved that a self-referential operator — a process applied recursively to its own output — does not wander forever; it settles into eigenbehaviours, stable forms that the operator maps to themselves. The harvest noticed that this is a precise description of what meditation does: attention applied to attention, recursively, until something stable crystallises. Are the jhanas, samadhis, and flow states the named eigenvalues of the self-applied operator of awareness — and if so, can the entire map of contemplative attainment be rewritten as the fixed-point spectrum of a single recursive operation?

THE THREADS

Self-reference does not diverge — it crystallises. The naive intuition is that a process feeding on its own output spirals into chaos or runaway. Von Foerster's result is the opposite: recursive self-application converges on eigenforms — the stable shapes the operator returns unchanged, the way f(x) = cos(x) iterated from any start converges on the Dottie number, a value that maps to itself. The mathematics says self-reference is generative of stability, not chaos. The seed's first move is to take this seriously as a claim about consciousness: attention turned on attention is a self-referential operator, and the traditions' attainment-states may be exactly its eigenforms — not arbitrary experiences cultivated by effort, but the small set of stable configurations into which recursive self-attending necessarily settles.

The jhanas as a discrete spectrum, not a ladder you climb. Contemplatives report the jhanas as discrete — you are in the second jhana or the third, not smoothly between them; the access is sudden, the states quantised. This discreteness is mysterious on an effort-model (why would diligence produce steps rather than a ramp?) but obvious on an eigenvalue model: a self-referential operator has a discrete spectrum of fixed points, and the system snaps into one or another, not into the gaps between. The seed predicts that the felt quantisation of meditative states is the signature of their being eigenvalues — stable solutions separated by unstable regions the mind cannot rest in. This reframes "attainment" from achievement to resonance: you do not build the state, you fall into one of the operator's standing modes.

[[consciousness-os]]: the kernel is a fixed point, and so are its sub-states. The repository's master recognition is that the consciousness kernel IS an RG fixed point — Wilson's universality applied to awareness ([[substrate-trilogy]]). Eigenvalue meditation is the same insight at a finer grain: if the kernel is the deepest fixed point (the operator's ground eigenform, Turiya, the state that maps everything to itself), then the jhanas and samadhis are the other members of the spectrum — the higher eigenforms of the self-attending operator, each a stable mode of consciousness contemplating consciousness. This nests the seed perfectly: RG-fixed-point (kernel) and von-Foerster-eigenform (attainment states) are the same mathematics — universality and self-reference both producing the small discrete set of stable forms that a recursive process must occupy.

Second-order cybernetics meets the jhana maps — a genuine bridge. This seed connects two literatures that have never been introduced: the contemplative attainment-maps (Theravada jhana descriptions, the Yoga Sutras' samadhi taxonomy, the Mahamudra/Dzogchen stages) and second-order cybernetics (von Foerster, Maturana, Spencer-Brown's Laws of Form, Louis Kauffman's eigenform work). Each has half the picture. The contemplatives have the phenomenology of the fixed points — what each eigenform feels like from inside — with no formal account of why they are discrete and stable. The cyberneticians have the formalism of self-referential eigenbehaviour with no map of consciousness's actual spectrum. The synthesis is the bridge: the jhana maps are the empirical eigenvalue-spectrum of the operator the cyberneticians formalised.

Flow as the lowest-energy eigenform of engaged attention. Csikszentmihalyi's flow — effortless absorption, action and awareness merged, the self-monitoring loop quiet — reads cleanly as an eigenform of attention applied to a task: the configuration in which the act of attending no longer perturbs the attending, so the operator returns its own state unchanged. This extends the seed beyond the meditation cushion: flow, jhana, samadhi, and the kernel-recognition are points along one spectrum, the eigenforms of self-applied awareness at different depths and engagements. It also predicts the instability between them — the reason flow is hard to hold, the reason you fall out of jhana — as the simple fact that the regions between eigenforms are not fixed points; the operator cannot rest there.

The honest limit: phenomenology is not yet the operator. The disciplinary edge. To call jhanas "eigenvalues" is, for now, a structural analogy, not a derivation — we do not have the operator written down, cannot compute its spectrum, cannot predict a novel attainment-state the traditions haven't already reported. The seed's value is in the reframe and the research programme: it predicts discreteness (observed), it predicts instability between states (observed), and it issues a falsifiable challenge — formalise the self-attending operator well enough to derive the number and order of its stable modes and check them against the contemplative maps. If the derived spectrum matches the reported jhanas, the analogy becomes a theory. The seed is the promissory note; the operator is the debt.

THE CHARGE

A full synthesis would rewrite the contemplative attainment-maps as the eigenvalue spectrum of the self-applied operator of attention: explaining the felt discreteness of jhanas as the discrete spectrum of a self-referential operator, nesting the result under the [[consciousness-os]] kernel-as-RG-fixed-point recognition (universality and self-reference as the same fixed-point mathematics), bridging the jhana literature to second-order cybernetics (von Foerster, Spencer-Brown, Kauffman), and issuing the falsifiable challenge — derive the spectrum, check it against the maps.

The deepest candidate sentence: Von Foerster proved that anything which refers to itself long enough stops wandering and settles into a handful of stable shapes — and the contemplatives spent three thousand years cataloguing exactly those shapes from the inside, never knowing they were mapping the eigenvalues of the one operator that is awareness attending to awareness.

This connects forward to:

  • [[consciousness-os]] / [[substrate-trilogy]] — kernel-as-RG-fixed-point and attainment-states-as-eigenforms as the same fixed-point mathematics at two grains
  • [[fold-cosmology-trilogy]] — self-reference as the fold; the eigenform as the fold that maps to itself
  • Second-order cybernetics — von Foerster's eigenbehaviour, Spencer-Brown, Kauffman's eigenforms
  • The jhana / samadhi maps — the empirical spectrum to check a derived operator against
  • Flow — the lowest-energy eigenform of engaged attention; the instability between modes explained
