SEED — Jargon as Scar Tissue or Myelin: The Same Words, Insulating or Blocking
Planted 10 June 2026 from the June 2026 Seed-Harvest. Final sweep. Charging.
THE QUESTION
Shared specialist vocabulary does two opposite things. When it points at direct experience, it insulates the signal — like myelin on a nerve, it lets meaning travel fast and far between people who have had the experience the word names. When it is severed from its referent — recited by those who never had the experience — the same vocabulary blocks the signal, like scar tissue, an obstruction where conduction should be. The [[manual-of-ascendance-transcendence]] cluster found this and the harvest pulled it out: every ossified orthodoxy is myelin that became scar tissue. What is the diagnostic that tells living vocabulary from dead doctrine?
THE THREADS
Myelin and scar tissue are the same material in opposite relationships. Myelin insulates a nerve so the signal jumps fast; scar tissue blocks conduction where tissue was damaged. The seed's foundational image: specialist vocabulary is neither inherently good (clarifying) nor inherently bad (obscuring) — it is the same material doing opposite things depending on one variable: whether it is connected to its referent. "Emptiness," "the fold," "darshan," "surrender" — each is myelin in the mouth of one who has touched the experience (it transmits, fast, to another who has) and scar tissue in the mouth of one who has only learned the word (it blocks, substituting the token for the experience). The word does not change; its relationship to direct experience changes, and that relationship is the whole difference between transmission and obstruction.
The diagnostic: does the word point through itself, or stop at itself? The seed's operational core. Living vocabulary (myelin) is transparent — the word points through itself to the experience, and the speaker would happily drop the word if a better pointer appeared; the term is a finger, and the finger knows it is not the moon. Dead vocabulary (scar tissue) is opaque — the word points at itself, the term has become the thing, and the speaker defends the word rather than the experience; the finger has forgotten the moon and insists you admire the finger. The diagnostic is therefore not which words but the speaker's relationship to them: can they say it another way? do they recognise the word as provisional? would they drop it if it stopped working? Living tech holds its vocabulary lightly (the [[the-thousand-names-as-curriculum]] non-fixation); dead doctrine grips its vocabulary as identity. The test is whether the word is held or gripped.
Every orthodoxy is myelin that became scar tissue — the failure mode of success. The seed's sharpest claim: ossification is not a random decay but the predictable failure mode of a successful transmission. A vocabulary becomes myelin because it worked — it transmitted a real experience so well that it spread to people who adopted the words without the experience, and at scale the words outrun the experience, and the myelin-for-the-experienced becomes scar-tissue-for-the-inheritors. Every living tradition is one generation away from becoming a dead one, because success (wide adoption of the vocabulary) is exactly what severs the words from the referent (most adopters never had the experience). This is why traditions ossify: not because they were wrong but because they were successful, and success spreads the myelin to nerves that have no signal to insulate, where it becomes scar.
It is the repository's own maintenance protocol — and its warning ([[infrastructure-of-seeing]]). The seed turns reflexive and urgent. The esoterica repository is building a vocabulary — "the fold," "the remainder," "darshan," "the kernel," the [[the-thousand-names-as-curriculum]] proliferation — and the seed is its own immune system against ossification: the warning that every one of these terms is myelin only as long as it stays connected to direct experience, and becomes scar tissue the moment it is recited without the recognition it names. The [[infrastructure-of-seeing]] "maintenance is creative work" recognition gains a specific task: the ongoing work of re-connecting the vocabulary to its referents — never letting the words become the thing, always pointing through them, dropping any term that has started pointing at itself. The repository's vocabulary will become dead doctrine exactly to the degree it succeeds and is recited rather than recognised — and this seed is the standing reminder to keep cutting the scar tissue out.
The contemporary register: a culture drowning in scar-tissue vocabulary. The seed's present-tense charge. Therapeutic language ("boundaries," "trauma," "gaslighting"), spiritual language ("presence," "energy," "manifestation"), political language ("justice," "freedom") — much of it began as myelin (real terms for real experiences) and has become scar tissue at scale (recited tokens severed from the experiences, blocking the signal they once carried, used to avoid the experience rather than transmit it). The seed offers a cultural diagnostic: when a vocabulary spreads faster than the experiences it names, it ossifies into scar tissue, and a culture can fill with words that block the very things they name. The recovery is not new words (which will also ossify) but the [[logismos-nothos-the-bastard-faculty]] and [[the-thousand-names-as-curriculum]] practice of holding vocabulary lightly — pointing through every word to the experience, and dropping any term that has become a thing in itself.
THE CHARGE
A full synthesis would develop jargon as scar tissue or myelin: the same vocabulary insulating or blocking depending on its connection to direct experience, the diagnostic (does the word point through itself or stop at itself; is it held or gripped), ossification as the failure mode of success (wide adoption severing words from referents; every tradition one generation from death), the repository's own maintenance protocol (re-connecting vocabulary to referents, cutting scar tissue, the immune system against its own ossification), and the contemporary register (a culture filling with recited tokens that block the experiences they name).
The deepest candidate sentence: The word "emptiness" is myelin in the mouth of one who has touched it and scar tissue in the mouth of one who has only learned it — the same material, insulating the signal or blocking it, and the entire difference is whether the word still points through itself to the experience or has quietly become the thing you defend instead.
This connects forward to:
- [[manual-of-ascendance-transcendence]] — vocabulary as myelin/scar-tissue; the diagnostic for living consciousness-tech versus dead doctrine
- [[the-thousand-names-as-curriculum]] / [[logismos-nothos-the-bastard-faculty]] — holding vocabulary lightly; non-fixation as the practice that keeps words from ossifying
- [[infrastructure-of-seeing]] — maintenance as creative work; re-connecting vocabulary to its referents as the repository's immune system against ossification
- Ossification as the failure mode of success — wide adoption severs words from experience; every tradition one generation from becoming dead doctrine
- The cultural diagnostic — therapeutic/spiritual/political vocabulary as scar tissue at scale; words that block the experiences they name
