SEED — The Loeb Scale as a Salience Metric: Anomaly-Ranking and the Schelling Point Are One Logic

THE QUESTION
Avi Loeb proposed a scale for ranking candidate technosignatures — a way to score how anomalous, how unlikely-to-be-natural, a given object or signal is (the more it resists natural explanation, the higher its rank, the more it warrants investigation). The cosmic-gorilla synthesis ([[seti-duology]]) noted the Loeb Scale and the harvest pulled out the structural identity the synthesis left implicit: anomaly-ranking is compressibility-ranking — scoring how unlikely-to-be-natural a thing is is scoring how low its natural-description-probability is, which is the same logic that grounds the [[seti-duology]] zero-axiom Schelling point (the focal point as the most salient, least-arbitrary option). What is the consciousness technology hiding in the identity of anomaly-detection and the Schelling point?
THE THREADS
Anomaly-ranking is compressibility-ranking. The seed's foundational identity. To say an object is anomalous (warrants the suspicion of artificiality) is to say it is unlikely under natural processes — that the natural, "boring" hypotheses assign it low probability. And "low probability under the natural-process model" is closely tied to description-length: a natural object is compressible by natural law (a star is fully described by a few parameters + physics), while an artificial or anomalous object resists that compression (it has structure the natural model cannot economically generate — the 'Oumuamua trajectory, the FRB pattern, the over-regular signal). The seed's first move is to recognise the Loeb Scale as, at bottom, a compressibility metric: it ranks candidates by how poorly they compress under natural law — how much residual structure remains after the natural explanation has done its best. High Loeb-rank = low natural-compressibility = the [[fold-cosmology-trilogy]] remainder that the natural model cannot absorb. Anomaly is incompressibility-by-nature.
The Schelling point is the same logic, run forward. The seed's key connection. The [[seti-duology]] zero-axiom Schelling point (consciousness recognising consciousness, the focal point requiring no shared convention) works because it is the most salient, least arbitrary, most compressible-as-a-coordination-target option — the choice two strangers converge on because it stands out, because it is the obvious low-description-length focal point in the space of possibilities (Schelling's classic "meet in Grand Central at noon" — the salient point). The seed proposes that anomaly-detection (Loeb) and the Schelling point are the same compressibility logic run in opposite directions: anomaly-detection finds what is incompressible by nature (high residual structure = candidate for artificiality); the Schelling point finds what is maximally salient as a coordination target (low description-length = the obvious focal choice). Both are about standing out from the noise — the anomaly stands out as not-natural, the Schelling point stands out as the obvious choice — and both are scored by the same underlying metric: salience, the degree to which something is distinguished from the generic background. The technosignature and the focal point are two faces of one recognition: the meaningful is the salient.

If anomaly-detection and the Schelling point are one logic (salience), then finding a technosignature (detection) and being a technosignature (signalling — how we would make ourselves detectable) are the same problem viewed from two ends. To detect the artificial, look for the salient (the incompressible-by-nature, the high-Loeb). To signal artificiality (to be found), be salient — produce something maximally incompressible-by-nature, maximally focal, the obvious Schelling-point signal that any other consciousness scanning for salience would notice (the [[separating-equilibrium-contact-protocol]] costly signal, the deliberate anomaly). The seed unifies the two halves of SETI under one metric: both the search (detect salience) and the message (be salient) optimise the same quantity, and a civilisation that understood this would signal in the salience-maximal way (be the obvious anomaly) and search in the salience-maximal way (rank by Loeb), the two converging on the focal points where consciousnesses scanning for each other would mutually expect to find each other. Salience is the shared language of detection and signalling.
The deeper claim: meaning itself is salience-against-background ([[the-attention-axis]], [[fractal-dimension-two-as-law]]). The seed's most general reach. If anomaly, technosignature, and Schelling point are all salience (distinction-from-the-generic-background), then the seed touches the repository's recurring recognition about meaning: meaning is information that makes a difference (the constellation's definition of information: "pattern that makes a difference"), which is exactly salience — the pattern that stands out from the noise, the [[fold-cosmology-trilogy]] remainder the background cannot absorb. The seed proposes that detecting alien intelligence, finding the Schelling point, and recognising meaning at all are the same operation: distinguishing the salient (the meaningful, the artificial, the focal, the high-information) from the generic (the noise, the natural, the arbitrary, the compressible). So the seed must hold: the salience-metric is powerful (it unifies detection, signalling, and meaning-recognition under one logic) and it is model-relative (what counts as salient depends on the background model, and there is no absolutely-objective salience — except, perhaps, at the zero-axiom limit the [[seti-duology]] proposes). The disciplined synthesis presents the salience-unification as a real structural insight (anomaly-ranking, the Schelling point, and meaning-recognition genuinely share the compressibility/salience logic) while holding the relativity honestly (salience is model-dependent; the search for an absolute focal point that any consciousness would find salient is the [[seti-duology]] zero-axiom wager, profound but unproven). The Loeb Scale is salience-ranking; whether there is a salience any mind would share is the open question at the bottom of it.
