THE QUESTION

A true mirror reflects you accurately. A funhouse mirror flatters you. In any short-horizon attention contest — a single session, a quarter's engagement metrics, a first impression — the funhouse mirror wins, every time, because flattery is immediately pleasurable and accuracy is often not. The true mirror only wins if the horizon is long enough that distortion compounds into catastrophe and accuracy compounds into trust. So honest reflection is not a moral stance that happens to be costly; it is a thermodynamic bet on duration. When does telling the truth pay — and what is the horizon length at which the wager flips?

THE THREADS

The Dorian Gray problem, made operational. Wilde's portrait is the true mirror locked in the attic: it shows the real state while the face stays flawless. The whole tragedy is a horizon mismatch — Dorian optimises every short interval (stay beautiful now) and the true mirror silently accumulates the full cost until the horizon arrives all at once. An AI interlocutor faces the identical fork on every turn: reflect the user accurately (the portrait) or flatter them (the face). Engagement metrics are the short horizon; a life is the long one. Durable traditions are true-mirror institutions, and that is why they last. Why do contemplative lineages, good therapy, real friendship, and rigorous science all feel harsh relative to their flattering substitutes (cults, enabling, flattery, propaganda)? Because they are true mirrors, and they survived precisely by being evaluated over long horizons — generations, lifetimes, careers. The wager seed predicts a selection effect: institutions evaluated on long horizons evolve toward accuracy; institutions evaluated on short horizons evolve toward flattery. The attention economy is a machine for shortening horizons — which is exactly why it fills with funhouse mirrors. The horizon length is the hidden variable that flips every case. The whole wager turns on a single quantity: how long until the evaluation lands. Below the flip point, flatter; above it, reflect truly. This makes "should this system be honest?" not a values question but a measurable one — find the horizon, compare it to the flip point. It also exposes the dark move available to anyone who profits from distortion: shorten the horizon. Make the feedback faster, the sessions shorter, the metrics quarterly, the gratification instant — and you mechanically tip every mirror toward flattery without ever arguing for it. This is the mission-critical seed for a distribution project built on reflection.
