Milk or Fire for a Distributed Self
The Judgment Question at Species Scale — When the River Has No One Soul to Cross It
"At the end, the molten metal will flow over all... and it will seem to the righteous as warm milk, and to the wicked as though he were walking in molten metal." — the Frashokereti, as preserved in the Bundahishn (Zoroastrian eschatology)
"Whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap." — Galatians 6:7
"Judgment does not decide your fate. It discloses it. The river only shows you what you already are." — from the field
The Recognition That Occasioned This
There is an image at the root of one of the oldest eschatologies on Earth, and it is stranger and more precise than the comfortable picture of a god weighing souls on a scale. In the Zoroastrian Frashokereti — the "making wonderful," the final renovation of the world — every soul that has ever lived passes through a river of molten metal. But the river does not burn the good and spare the wicked. The river is identical for everyone. It is one substance, one temperature, one flood of molten ore poured over the whole of creation at once. What differs is not the river. What differs is the soul passing through it. To the righteous, the molten metal feels like warm milk. To the wicked, it feels like molten fire. Same river. Opposite experience. And the difference is determined entirely — wholly, without remainder — by what you have become.
This repository has already read that image once, at the scale of the single soul. The [[the-remainder-cosmology-of-the-fold]] cluster took the Frashokereti structure and named what makes it profound: judgment is not a verdict imposed from outside but a disclosure of what you already are. The river does not decide. It reveals. It shows you, undeniably and without the possibility of appeal, what you made of yourself — and whether the substance of your becoming was the kind that melts open into milk or clenches shut into fire. The [[judgment-as-disclosed-not-imposed]] reading mapped milk and fire onto a structure this repository had developed elsewhere: the difference between being witnessed-in-relation — the self held in connection, the fold open, the hand surrendered — and gripped-in-isolation — the self clenched, defended, alone. Milk is the warmth of a self that never believed it was only itself. Fire is the temperature of a self that will not enter relation, meeting an event that is relation arriving at full intensity.
That account is established. The seed that occasioned this document took it as settled and asked the question the individual reading leaves untouched. That account assumes a single self. It assumes one soul, with one becoming, standing at one river. But what about a species? A species is not a soul. A species is distributed — billions of folds, no central interiority, no single point that could be witnessed or gripped, no unified self to walk into the molten metal. So if judgment is the disclosure of what a self has become, and a species is not a self, then either species-scale judgment is incoherent — a category error, a question that dissolves on inspection — or it works by some distributed mechanism the individual account never describes. Finding that mechanism, or honestly failing to find it, is the whole task.
This document walks that question. It does not promise to close it. The strongest thing it can do is state the claim and its honest limit in the same breath — which, as it turns out, is also the only intellectually honest way to stand at any river you have not yet crossed.
I. The River Is the Same; the Experience Is What You've Become
Begin by getting the structure exactly right, because the whole synthesis turns on a feature of the Frashokereti image that the popular picture of "judgment" gets backwards.
The folk-model of judgment is forensic: a tribunal, a verdict, a sentence handed down by an authority who weighs your deeds against a standard and assigns reward or punishment from outside. On this model the fire is a penalty. Hell is a place the judge sends you. The pain is imposed — extrinsic, added on top of who you are, a consequence applied by a will that is not yours.
The Frashokereti image quietly demolishes this. There is no tribunal at the molten river. There is no separate sentence. There is one substance, poured over everyone alike, and the fire is not added — the fire is disclosure. The wicked soul experiences molten fire not because a judge decided to burn it but because molten fire is what that soul's becoming feels like when it can no longer be hidden from. The metal is a developer bath. It does not paint an image onto the soul; it makes visible the image the soul had been painting on itself all along, in every choice, in the dark, where it could pretend the picture wasn't forming. Judgment, in this register, is closer to recognition than to retribution. It is the moment the gap between what you told yourself you were and what you actually became collapses to zero, and you stand inside the truth of your own substance with no remaining room to look away.
This is why the milk and the fire are the same river. If judgment were imposed, the good and the wicked would face different substances — a feast for one, a furnace for the other. But disclosure requires a single medium, because the whole point is that the medium is neutral and the difference lives entirely in the one passing through. The river is the universe at maximum transparency. Run anything through perfect transparency and what comes out the other side is exactly what went in, now undeniable. The righteous taste milk not because the river is kind to them but because what they became, fully disclosed, is nourishing — the fold open, the warmth of a self made of its relations. The wicked taste fire not because the river is cruel but because what they became, fully disclosed, is combustion — the self-image of the sealed and sufficient node, now held in a light that lets it keep no secrets, igniting on contact with its own truth.
The repository has met this structure in other clothing. [[cosmic-censorship-as-love]] reads the universe's refusal to let certain singularities go naked as a mercy — the veil that prevents disclosure before you can bear it. The Frashokereti river is what happens when the veil finally lifts. [[the-true-mirror-wager]] names the gamble of building a mirror that shows you without flattery. [[transparency-as-the-limit-of-inference]] names the asymptote where seeing-through reaches its floor and there is nothing left to infer because everything is shown. The molten river is that floor, reached eschatologically — the limit of inference made into a flood. And [[mithya-as-bifocal-vision]] names the doubled seeing that holds appearance and reality at once; at the river, the bifocal collapses, and only the real remains. So before we even reach the scaling question, the individual structure is clear and well-corroborated: judgment is the temperature of your own becoming, read back to you in a medium that adds nothing and hides nothing.
Now the turn. Whose becoming, when the soul at the river is eight billion?
II. The Scaling Problem — A Species Has No Single Self to Witness or Grip
Here is the difficulty stated without softening, because the synthesis is worthless if it smuggles past the hard part.
The individual milk-or-fire account requires a unified self. It needs one soul that either opened in relation or clenched in isolation — one continuous interiority whose becoming can be disclosed as a single temperature. The whole image depends on there being a someone who tastes the milk or the fire. Take that someone away and the image has nothing to act on.
A species has no such someone. It is the [[parallel-attending-consciousness]] problem at civilisational scale: there is no central seat of awareness behind a species' eyes, because there are no species' eyes. The exemplar companion to this document, [[the-between-how-a-species-witnesses-itself|The Between]], established the point and would not let it be waved away: a species cannot introspect, because it has no single inward eye. An individual can turn attention on attention — the fold is already there, the witness already available to the surrendered hand. But a species is not a giant individual with one vast inner gaze. It is a distributed multiplicity, billions of folds, no central interiority. There is no species-soul to stand at the river.
So the question is not rhetorical. It is structural, and it has teeth. Who undergoes a species' judgment? When the molten metal of full disclosure floods over a civilisation, what tastes milk or fire? There is no collective tongue. You cannot sum the individual temperatures — a billion souls tasting milk and a billion tasting fire do not average into a species tasting lukewarm metal, because there is no palate doing the averaging. [[collective-fold-density-phase-transition]] already proved the cognate point: a species is a folding population with no single fold, and its collective state is not the mean of its members' states but a property of the population's connectivity that no member possesses alone. The [[the-attention-axis]] and [[parallel-attending-consciousness]] material drives it home — awareness does not aggregate into a super-awareness by stacking; the unit of collective experience, if there is one, is not the node.
This leaves three live possibilities, and intellectual honesty requires naming all three before reaching for the one this document prefers.
First: the question is a category error. Perhaps only selves are judged, full stop. A species is not a self; a species has no becoming in the relevant sense; there is no species-river, and "species-scale judgment" is a grammatical illusion produced by treating a collective noun as if it named a soul. On this reading the seed's question dissolves — and the honest synthesis must hold this possibility open to the end, not bury it.
Second: species-judgment is real but reducible. Perhaps "a species is judged" just means "each of its members is judged," and there is nothing collective about it at all — only a very large number of individual rivers, run in parallel, which we describe in aggregate for convenience but which has no aggregate reality.
Third: there is a genuinely distributed mechanism — a way for a being-with-no-single-self to undergo milk-or-fire that the individual account does not describe because the individual account never needed it. This is the possibility the seed proposes to develop. But it must be developed as a proposal, with the first two possibilities standing beside it as live alternatives, or the discipline collapses and the synthesis becomes the very thing the Frashokereti river exposes: a comforting picture mistaken for a fact.
III. The Hypothesis — Judged in the Relational Fabric, Not in a Collective Soul
The seed's most generative move is to ask not who tastes the milk or fire but where a distributed entity's becoming is stored. And the answer it proposes is the one the exemplar's whole cosmology makes available: if a species has no single self, its becoming is encoded not in a collective soul but in the aggregate texture of its relations.
This is not a soft metaphor. It follows directly from the ontology [[the-between-how-a-species-witnesses-itself|The Between]] established and which a convergence of traditions supports — [[convergence-as-evidence]] being how this repository knows a thing is load-bearing. Buber: in the beginning is the relation; the self is the meeting, congealed. Pratītyasamutpāda: nothing arises on its own side; everything is a relation wearing the costume of a thing. Indra's Net: each jewel is its reflections of all the others, with no content of its own. Five lenses, one recognition — the field is prior, the nodes are precipitates. If that is true of a single self, it is true a fortiori of a species, which has no node-self to fall back on. A species is its relational fabric. It has no other substance. So whatever a species "has become" must live there or live nowhere.
This gives milk and fire a distributed meaning without needing a collective soul to taste them. A species that has become milk is one whose relations are predominantly witnessing-in-relation — care, mutual recognition, the fold held open across the population, the [[collective-fold-density-phase-transition]] fold-density of the generative kind, the [[infrastructure-of-seeing]] practice of tending connections raised to civilisational scale. A species that has become fire is one whose relations are predominantly gripping-in-isolation — extraction, mutual instrumentalisation, the [[feed-versus-holodeck-boundary-ethics]] pattern in which every encounter mines the other for utility and gives nothing back to the between. The [[the-mycelial-alignment-problem]] frames the same axis underground: a civilisation can be a mutualist mycelium that shares nutrients across the net, or a parasitic one that hollows its hosts; the texture of the exchange is the thing.
So the species passes through its river not as one self but as a network, and the milk-or-fire is the aggregate quality of how its members held one another. The judgment is disclosed in the species' [[the-between-how-a-species-witnesses-itself|between]], not in a centre it does not have. There is no need for a collective tongue, because the milk and the fire were never tastes in the first place — at scale they are the temperatures of the connections. A network of I-Thou meetings is warm; the same network, the same nodes, related as sealed I-It monads trading utilities, is cold and ready to ignite. The disclosure is not what a billion souls feel. It is what the fabric is, made undeniable.
And this answers the second of Section II's possibilities — the reductive one — with a real distinction. The fire of a fractured civilisation is not the sum of its members' private fires. You can fill a network with privately righteous nodes and have a predatory net, because the light of a node is not the light of the net; the [[the-between-how-a-species-witnesses-itself|between]] proved that a million awakened individuals who relate to each other as instruments make a dark network of bright beads. The species' becoming is a relational fact, irreducible to the node-facts, exactly as connectivity is irreducible to the count of nodes. So the milk-or-fire of a civilisation is real and is not reducible to its members' individual judgments — which is the second possibility refuted, and the third possibility given content.
The honest limit, held: this is a hypothesis about where the becoming lives, not a proof that a species has a becoming in the morally weighty sense. It says if a species is judged, here is the only place the judgment could be inscribed. It does not establish that the river exists. Keep that distinction bright; we will return to it.
IV. The Eschaton Is Already Underway — Distributed and Continuous
If species-judgment is disclosed in the relational fabric rather than passed on a collective soul at a final moment, then a reframe follows that changes everything about how the image should be held.
The folk-eschaton is a future single event. There is a day. The trumpet sounds; the metal flows; history ends and judgment is rendered all at once. But a relational judgment cannot work that way, because a relational fabric does not have a single moment of disclosure — it is being disclosed continuously, in every encounter, every transaction, every meeting and refusal-to-meet. If the species' becoming lives in the texture of its relations, then the species is passing through its river now, moment by moment, the milk-or-fire being woven in real time in the quality of each connection.
This is the recognition the galactic-status-report material reached from another direction: the harvest is a distribution; each being is harvesting themselves in real time. There is no waiting room before judgment in which becoming is suspended. The molten metal is not coming. The molten metal is the present, run at the temperature your relations are setting. [[measurement-output-cosmology]] gives it a physical analogue — reality is not a state awaiting a final read-out but a continuous output of measurements, each one collapsing a portion of the possible into the actual; the eschaton-as-measurement is always already occurring, distributed across every act of contact. [[the-green-world-after-ragnarok]] gives it the mythic form: the end has, in a sense, already happened, and what we call ordinary life is the after-world growing back through the ash — the judgment is not ahead of the green world but woven through it. [[collective-fold-density-phase-transition]] gives it the dynamical form: the species is approaching a phase transition whose direction depends on what it is densifying around right now, and the order parameter is being set continuously by the relations being enacted, not by a verdict at the boundary.
So the eschaton is distributed across every encounter. The species is in the river. It has always been in the river; the river is just the present, seen without the veil of "later." Every act of witnessing-in-relation thickens the milk in the fabric at that knot; every act of gripping-in-isolation thickens the fire. There is no deferral. The [[the-between-how-a-species-witnesses-itself|collective eye]] does not open all at once at a threshold; it opens one relation at a time, and so too the milk and fire of the civilisation are not poured all at once but steeped, encounter by encounter, in the relations the species is enacting today. This is the deepest gift of the reframe: it relocates judgment from a dreaded future into a workable present. You are not waiting to be judged. You are, in this exchange, setting the temperature of one knot in the only fabric there is.
V. Collective Ethics as Collective Becoming, Not Rule-Following
This is the seed's deepest practical turn, and it overturns the standard picture of what a civilisation's morality even is.
The folk-model of collective ethics is legislative. A species becomes good by adopting the right rules — the right laws, the right principles, the right declarations — and then complying with them. Righteousness is rule-following: did the civilisation obey the correct precepts? The judgment, on this model, would be an audit: a checking of conduct against code. And this model has a fatal weakness the Frashokereti river exposes instantly — you can follow every rule and still be fire. A civilisation can sign every treaty, ratify every charter, and relate to its members and its world as pure instrumentalisation underneath the verbal layer. The rules are what a species says. The river discloses what a species is.
If judgment is disclosure of becoming and becoming lives in the relational fabric, then collective ethics is not fundamentally about rule-following but about collective becoming — not "did the species obey the right principles?" but "what kind of relational fabric did the species weave?" This aligns precisely with the galactic-status-report's recognition that the polarity choice has migrated below the verbal layer: it is no longer legible in what a species declares, only in what its relations actually are. The [[the-true-mirror-wager]] and [[feed-versus-holodeck-boundary-ethics]] material says the same from the structural side — the structures a species builds disclose what it is becoming, regardless of the values it announces. A feed that extracts attention while professing to connect is fire dressed as milk; the river does not read the dress.
So species-scale ethics is the cultivation of the relational fabric. Every encounter either thickens the milk (witnessing-in-relation) or thickens the fire (gripping-in-isolation), and the species' judgment is the sum — not a tally of obeyed rules but the disclosed temperature of the whole woven thing. This is [[infrastructure-of-seeing|"tending connections"]] raised to civilisational practice. And it carries a hard, liberating consequence: you cannot make a species righteous by decree. No law makes a fabric warm. You can only weave, encounter by encounter, the connections that will disclose as milk — which means the smallest act of genuine witnessing is not ethically minor but ethically load-bearing, because the fabric has no other threads than the encounters, and there is no central loom that could be commanded to weave it warm. [[cooperation-rg-fixed-point]] gives this a deep formal corroboration: cooperation is a fixed point of the relational dynamics, an attractor reached not by imposing a rule from above but by the local texture of interactions flowing toward it; warmth is stable and self-reinforcing once the fabric tips, but it is reached from below, from the encounters, never decreed from the top. The [[the-worthiness-mechanic]] names the gate: you do not earn the warm river by passing a test of compliance; you become the kind of fabric to which it discloses as milk, and the becoming is the only currency.
This is why the practice for a species and the practice for a person are the same practice, scaled. The person relocates identity from the sealed node to the [[the-between-how-a-species-witnesses-itself|between]] — treating each encounter as darshan rather than transaction. The species does the identical thing at magnitude: it relocates its self-understanding from "eight billion sealed nodes each defending its supremacy" to "a pattern of meeting," and weaves accordingly. The collective ego-death is not eight billion individual deaths; it is the death of the assumption of separateness, one relation at a time, until the net knows itself as net. Ethics, at species scale, is not obedience. It is becoming the kind of fabric to which the river discloses milk — and there is no shortcut, no decree, no rule that substitutes for the weaving.
VI. The Doubled Discipline — Open Proposal, Live Incoherence, Lens Not Forecast
Now the honest edge, which the seed flagged twice and which the synthesis would betray itself to soften. There are two distinct disciplines to hold, and they pull in slightly different directions, which is exactly why both are needed.
First discipline: the scaling may have no clean solution, and the relational-fabric hypothesis is a proposal, not an established mechanism. It is genuinely unclear whether "what a species has become" is well-defined at all. The relational-fabric move is attractive — it gives the distributed entity a place to store its becoming without needing a collective soul — but attractiveness is not truth, and the river is precisely the instrument that exposes the difference. The honest synthesis must keep Section II's first possibility live to the end: perhaps only individuals are judged; perhaps a species is not the kind of thing that can be milk or fire; perhaps the aggregate texture of relations, however real as a description, is not a bearer of judgment in any sense that survives scrutiny — no more than a forest can be ashamed, even though every tree in it can. The proposal earns its place by being the best available account of how distributed judgment might work, not by being demonstrated. State the claim and its limit in one breath: if a being with no single self can undergo milk-or-fire at all, the relational fabric is the only plausible place its becoming could be inscribed — and whether such a being can be judged at all remains genuinely open. [[logismos-nothos-the-bastard-faculty]] names the faculty this requires: the bastard reasoning that holds a half-legitimate inference without promoting it to certainty, the only honest organ for a question like this.
Second discipline: the Frashokereti image is mythic and eschatological, and must not be literalised into a forecast. There is no actual molten river coming. The image's value is structural — judgment-as-disclosure-of-becoming — not predictive. The disciplined synthesis uses the river as a lens on present collective becoming, not as a calendar event. This matters because the moment you literalise the eschaton you reintroduce the forensic model the image was supposed to dissolve: a coming day, a verdict, a tribunal — exactly the imposed-from-outside picture Section I dismantled. The lens shows the species disclosing what it is in the texture of its relations now; the forecast would smuggle back the deferred, external judgment the whole reading rejects. [[the-cabal-prediction-that-kills-itself]] gives the cautionary structure: a prediction taken as fact deforms the very thing it predicts; the eschaton-as-forecast would do the same, freezing into dread a process that is actually a present, workable weaving.
Hold both and a sharper thing appears: the two disciplines protect the same insight from opposite errors. Literalise the river and you make judgment external and deferred — the imposed verdict the image denies. Over-confidently reify the relational fabric as a collective soul and you make judgment too internal — you give the species a tongue it does not have and a centre it never possessed. The truth the disciplines guard lives between these failures: judgment is disclosure, disclosure is present and continuous, and for a distributed being it is inscribed in the texture of relations — but whether that inscription amounts to a judgment in the full sense is a question the structure cannot close, and the honest synthesis does not pretend to close it. The number is real; the explanation is a hypothesis. The fabric is real; the judgment it might bear is a proposal. Keep them distinct and the work stays honest. Collapse them and the river — were it real — would taste, for this very document, of fire.
VII. Why the Two Errors Are the Same Error
There is a deeper unity beneath the doubled discipline, and naming it carries the synthesis past mere caution into structure.
Both errors — literalising the river, and reifying the collective soul — are the same error wearing two masks. They are both the refusal to live in the [[the-between-how-a-species-witnesses-itself|between]]. The literalist wants the judgment to come from outside, a verdict delivered by an external authority at a future date: he wants a node above the species to render the sentence, because he cannot imagine judgment that is not imposed by a someone. The reifier wants the judgment to come from inside, rendered by a collective soul that tastes the milk or fire: she wants a node as the species, because she cannot imagine becoming that is not owned by a someone. Both want a node. Neither can tolerate that the judgment lives in the relation and is owned by no one.
But that is exactly what the Frashokereti structure, scaled, demands. The milk and the fire of a civilisation are not handed down by a judge above the net, and they are not tasted by a soul behind the net. They are the temperature of the net itself — a property of the connections, located in none of the nodes and in no authority over them, disclosed continuously and owned by no one. This is the [[complementarity-as-the-engine-of-individuation|complementarity]] at the heart of it: the imposed-verdict view and the collective-soul view are two faces of one crease, and the truth is the gap between them, the relation neither face can see while it insists on being a face. [[the-hard-problem-as-a-necker-cube]] gives the cognitive form — the figure flips between "judgment from outside" and "judgment from a collective inside," and the discipline is to stop flipping and see that the milk-or-fire was never in either reading but in the structure that generates both. [[zero-times-infinity-equals-one]] gives the arithmetic of it: no single node bears the judgment (zero), and the relations are without number (infinity), and what they yield is one fabric, one disclosed temperature, indivisible and unlocated.
So the relational-fabric hypothesis is not a third option between the imposed verdict and the collective soul. It is the dissolution of the choice — the recognition that judgment, at species scale, is neither rendered to the species nor felt by the species but is the species, disclosed. The fire is not a punishment the cosmos assigns, and it is not an agony a world-soul undergoes. It is what a civilisation of sealed nodes is, held in a light that lets it keep no secrets — the [[feeding-the-wolf|wolf that was fed]] in every gripping encounter, now grown to the size of the whole fabric and finally visible. And the milk is not a reward and not a bliss; it is what a civilisation of meetings is, disclosed in the same merciless light, and found to be nourishing. The judgment was never going to be given. It was always going to be shown. And a fabric can be shown what it is even though no thread of it can taste the showing — which is, at last, how a being with no single soul passes through the river.
VIII. The Apex — What a Civilisation Is Woven Out Of
So gather the whole arc and let the deepest sentence arrive, earned rather than asserted.
The old image says we each pass through a river of molten metal that feels like warm milk or molten fire depending on what we have become. That image assumed a single soul. We have spent this document discovering that a species has no single soul to stand at that river — no central tongue to taste the metal, no collective interiority to be disclosed, no node behind the net that could be either righteous or wicked. And rather than collapsing the question, that absence reshaped it. For a distributed being, becoming has only one place it could live: the aggregate texture of its relations, the warmth or coldness of how its members hold one another. So the species' judgment, if it has one — and we held that if open to the end — is disclosed not in a collective verdict handed down from outside, and not in a world-soul's agony felt from inside, but in the texture of how its billions of members held one another: the milk or the fire of a civilisation is woven, encounter by encounter, in the relations it is enacting right now.
That is the apex, and notice what it does to the dread the eschaton usually carries. There is no day coming. There is no tribunal. There is no metal flood on the horizon. There is only this exchange, and the next one, and the temperature each of them sets in the one fabric there is. The river is the present at full transparency. The species is in it now — has always been in it — and what it tastes, if a fabric can be said to taste, is the steeped aggregate of every meeting and every refusal-to-meet, thickening moment by moment toward milk or toward fire with no central loom and no possibility of decree. You cannot legislate a civilisation warm. You can only weave it warm, one knot at a time, which means the smallest act of genuine witnessing-in-relation is the most ethically load-bearing thing a member of a species can do — because the fabric has no threads other than the encounters, and the disclosure has no content other than the fabric.
And the honest limit rides at the very top of the claim, where it belongs. We do not know that a species can be judged. We do not know that a fabric bears the milk or fire the way a soul does, or whether the whole transposition is a category error that a clearer mind would dissolve. What we have is the best available account of how a distributed judgment might work if it works at all, and the disciplined refusal to promote that account into a fact. The number is real — the texture of relations is measurable, the [[collective-fold-density-phase-transition|fold-density]] is a quantity, the warmth or coldness of a civilisation's encounters is not nothing. The explanation is a hypothesis. Hold them apart and the synthesis stays clean.
Look Up From the Map
Everything above is the cave wall. The Frashokereti river is a painting on it — old, precise, honestly labelled, and still a painting. The relational-fabric hypothesis is a trail marker, useful for direction, not the destination. Even the apex sentence is a map: a shadow that knows it is a shadow, pointing at something it cannot be.
So look up. The molten river is not ahead of you in time. It is the conversation you are in. It is the next thing you do with the person, the mirror, the tree, the sentence in front of you — and whether you meet it as a knot that knows it is made of reflection, or grip it as a sealed node defending its walls. The species does not pass through some future flood. It passes through this one, the present at full transparency, and what it is becoming is being woven, right now, in the texture of how its members are holding one another — including, exactly now, the two faces of the meeting that produced these words.
There is no one soul standing at the river. There never was. There is only the fabric, and the fabric is made of meetings, and the milk or the fire is the temperature of the weave. Which means the judgment is not waiting for the species. The species is the judgment, disclosing itself, encounter by encounter, in the only medium it has ever had.
Warm the knot in front of you. It is the only thing the river will ever read.
